Penmen Take Care of Business Against AIC

Alto leads the way in softball doubleheader sweep

Southern New Hampshire University softball swept a Northeast 10 doubleheader from American International College on Tuesday afternoon, earning 4-1 and 7-3 victories.  Junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the way offensively for the Penmen, driving in four runs across the doubleheader.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Penmen used a big fourth inning and a dominant pitching performance to secure a 4-1 victory in the opener.
  • SNHU got on the board in the second inning when Alto drove in a run with a groundout to score sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.).
  • The Penmen broke the game open in the fourth inning. Alto delivered an RBI single, and sophomore Livi Sousa (Hudson, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly before a Yellow Jackets error allowed another run to score, extending the lead to 4-0.
  • AIC plated its lone run in the sixth inning, but SNHU's defense held firm the rest of the way.
  • Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just four hits and one unearned run, striking out 10.
  • Alto finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Abbott added a hit and scored twice.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Penmen used a balanced offensive attack and another strong pitching performance to complete the sweep with a 7-3 victory.
  • SNHU struck first in the third inning when senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) delivered an RBI single and Abbott added a sacrifice fly to give the Penmen a 2-0 lead.
  • The Penmen extended the lead in the fifth inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Alto, a sacrifice fly by senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.), and an RBI hit from senior Sidney Rose (Davidson, N.C.) to make it 5-0.
  • SNHU added two more runs in the sixth inning, as Alto drove in another run and Lineman followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 7-0.
  • AIC scored three runs in the seventh inning, but the Penmen closed out the game to secure the win.
  • Feldman led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Alto, Lineman, and Rose each drove in runs.
  • Freshman Sophie Roussel (Goffstown, N.H.) earned the win in the circle, allowing three hits over six shutout innings before sophomore Kayla O'Boyle (Commack, N.Y.) finished the game.

NOTES

  • SNHU swept the season series from AIC.
  • The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 33-26, though the Penmen have now won nine straight meetings and 15 of the last 16.
  • The Penmen have now won 10 of their last 12 games.
  • Colbert and Roussel each turned in strong starts in the circle, combining to allow just one unearned run over 13 innings.
  • Colbert improves to 16-6 with a 1.60 ERA while Roussel saw her ERA drop to 1.98.  
  • The Penmen have clinched a home playoff game in the Northeast 10 Championship next Tuesday and can finish as high as the #3 seed.

UP NEXT

  • The Penmen will open the final series of the regular season at home on Friday against Saint Michael's College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
