Southern New Hampshire University softball swept a Northeast 10 doubleheader from Saint Michael's College on Friday afternoon, earning 7-1 and 5-3 victories. Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) highlighted the day in the circle, becoming the first SNHU pitcher since 2014 (Ali Maloof) to reach 200 strikeouts in a single season.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Penmen used a pair of early multi-run innings and a dominant pitching performance to secure a 7-1 victory in the opener.
- SNHU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, as sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) delivered an RBI double before sophomore Livi Sousa (Hudson, Mass.) followed with a two-run double.
- The Penmen added two more runs in the second inning, capitalizing on a pair of Saint Michael's errors and an RBI single from junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) to extend the lead to 5-0.
- After Saint Michael's got on the board in the fifth inning, SNHU answered with two runs in the sixth. Alto delivered an RBI single, and senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) added a run-scoring fielder's choice to push the lead to 7-1.
- Colbert was dominant, tossing a complete game while allowing five hits and one run and striking out eight.
- Alto, Sousa, Abbott, and senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) each recorded multiple hits as the Penmen totaled 14 hits.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Penmen struck early and held off a late rally to complete the sweep with a 5-3 victory.
- SNHU erupted for four runs in the first inning. Abbott opened the scoring with an RBI single, Lineman followed with a run-scoring groundout, and Sousa delivered a two-run single to make it 4-0.
- Saint Michael's got on the board in the sixth inning, but the Penmen answered in the bottom half when senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) doubled home a run to extend the lead to 5-1.
- The Purple Knights scored twice in the seventh inning, but SNHU held on to secure the victory.
- Freshman Sophie Roussel (Goffstown, N.H.) earned the win, allowing one run over 6.2 innings. She induced a double play with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
- Alto led the offense with an RBI in the game and drove in four runs on the day, while Feldman and DeMoura each added multiple hits.
NOTES
- SNHU records 30 wins for the first time since 2019, when they went 38-15.
- The Penmen have now won the last 20 meetings with the Purple Knights and lead 52-10 all-time.
- SNHU remains in third place in the Northeast 10 standings, two games ahead of Assumption.
- The Penmen have secured a home game in the opening round of the Northeast 10 Championship, which begins Tuesday.
- Colbert leads the Northeast 10 with a 1.58 ERA, 17 wins, and 205 strikeouts.
- Roussel ranks second in the league with a 1.73 ERA.
- DeMoura extended her hitting streak to 14 games.
