Southern New Hampshire University softball rallied from a five-run deficit to tie the game twice, but third-seeded Saint Thomas Aquinas College pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 7-6 walk-off victory over the sixth-seeded Penmen on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Division II East Regional 2 at Adelphi University. SNHU will meet seventh-seeded University of Bridgeport in an elimination game Friday at 12:30 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Saint Thomas Aquinas opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single from Yazmine Garcia.
- The Spartans added three runs in the third on a bases-clearing double by Trinadey Santiago, then pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fourth on an RBI double from Nayah Diaz.
- SNHU erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Freshman Payton Bryson (Franklin, N.H.) led off with a triple, senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) singled and junior Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.) followed with an RBI double.
- Sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) then delivered a two-run single up the middle to pull the Penmen within 5-3.
- Senior Sidney Rose (Davidson, N.C.) added an RBI single, and freshman Tori Christie (Barnstead, N.H.) drew a bases-loaded walk to even the score at 5-5.
- Saint Thomas Aquinas moved back in front in the sixth on Santiago's RBI single, but SNHU answered in the seventh when Feldman lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored sophomore Livi Sousa (Hudson, Mass.) to tie the game, 6-6.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Jordyn Gautier singled, stole second and scored on Elyse Marcano's two-out single up the middle to give the Spartans the walk-off win.
- SNHU finished with 12 hits, led by DeMoura, who went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Feldman, Abbott and Sousa each recorded two hits.
- Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) started in the circle for the Penmen, while sophomore Kayla O'Boyle (Commack, N.Y.) worked four innings in relief.
NOTES
- The Penmen are now 33-22 on the season - SNHU's 55 games played are the most in program history.
- DeMoura recorded her team-leading 19th multi-hit game of the season, raising her batting average to .402. She has reached safely in her last 21 games.
- Abbott drove in two runs and now has 26 RBI on the season.
- Bryson tripled and scored during SNHU's five-run fifth inning. It was her first extra-base hit of her career.
- Sousa went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.
- The win was STAC's first in four all-time meetings with the Penmen. The teams were meeting in the postseason for the first time.
- The Spartans, the ECC champ, have won 19 consecutive games and will meet #2 seed and host Adelphi University in Friday's game at 10:00 a.m.

- SNHU will face University of Bridgeport in an elimination game Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Adelphi University. The winner advances to play again Friday at 3 p.m. against the loser of Saint Thomas Aquinas and Adelphi.
