Southern New Hampshire University softball eliminated the top two seeds on Friday to advance to the Northeast 10 Championship against fourth-seeded Assumption College. The Penmen opened the day with a 10-4 win over top-seeded and No. 19-ranked Franklin Pierce, then followed with a 4-2 victory over second-seeded Adelphi behind a gem from freshman Sophie Roussel (Goffstown, N.H.).
SNHU 10, FRANKLIN PIERCE 4
- The Penmen pounded out 15 hits and scored in five different innings to eliminate the top-seeded Ravens.
- Junior Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.) reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and two walks.
- Senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
- Senior Sidney Rose (Davidson, N.C.) added two doubles and an RBI, while freshman Tori Christie (Barnstead, N.H.) drove in two runs.
- Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) earned the win, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks over seven innings.
SNHU 4, ADELPHI 2
- Roussel kept Adelphi off the board through six innings and carried the Penmen into the championship round.
- SNHU took a 2-0 lead in the third when Feldman doubled to right field, scoring Christie and freshman Payton Bryson (Franklin, N.H.).
- The Penmen added two more in the fourth on a two-run double from Christie that scored sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) and freshman Kylee Craft (South Glens Falls, N.Y.).
- Adelphi scored twice in the seventh, but sophomore Kayla O'Boyle (Commack, N.Y.) came on to record the final out and earn the save, her fourth.
- Roussel improved to 6-2, allowing five hits and two runs, one earned, over 6.2 innings.
NOTES
- Colbert improved to 19-8 on the season, allowing eight hits and four runs. Her six strikeouts give her 223 on the season.
- SNHU has won four of five meetings with Franklin Pierce this season and holds a 69-36 lead in the all-time series.
- The Penmen are now 2-4 against Adelphi this season, while the Panthers lead the all-time series, 24-10.
- Roussel's 1.81 ERA leads the Northeast 10, while Colbert ranks second at 1.88.
- DeMoura ranks fourth in the NE10 with a .394 batting average.
- SNHU advances to the NE10 Championship final for the fourth time, winning titles in 2014 and 2015. The Penmen were runners-up in 2016.
- DeMoura and Feldman each totaled four hits and three RBIs on the day.
- Rose recorded three hits, including two doubles, and drove in a run.
- Christie had two RBIs in each game.
