Southern New Hampshire University softball was two outs away from forcing a winner-take-all game in the Northeast 10 Championship Final before Assumption University rallied for six runs in the seventh inning to earn a 6-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Pierce University. The loss leaves the Penmen awaiting word on Monday regarding a potential berth in the NCAA Division II National Championship.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- In a tightly played championship game, SNHU controlled the action through six innings, building a 4-0 lead behind timely hitting and strong pitching.
- The Penmen broke through in the fourth inning when sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) singled to center field to score freshman Brenna Howley (Abington, Mass.), who was running for junior Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.).
- SNHU added another run in the fifth as DeMoura delivered an RBI single to bring home senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) and extend the lead to 2-0.
- The Penmen appeared to seize control in the sixth inning. Junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) singled and later scored, and senior Sidney Rose (Davidson, N.C.) drove in two runs with a single that was misplayed in the outfield, pushing the advantage to 4-0.
- Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) was dominant through six innings, limiting Assumption to just four hits while working around traffic on the bases.
- Assumption mounted its comeback in the bottom of the seventh. A bases-loaded walk brought home the first run before Kaitlyn Cahill delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to one.
- Moments later, Maddy Bland ended the game with a three-run home run, completing the six-run rally and giving the Greyhounds the championship.
- SNHU finished with nine hits in the contest, with Feldman, DeMoura, and Abbott each recording two hits.
NOTES
- The Penmen reached the Northeast 10 Championship Final for the first time since 2016 while Assumption won its first title since 2012.
- The Greyhounds were playing in the Championship Final for the third time in the last four seasons.
- Assumption went 4-0 in the Championship which included wins over the top three seeds, Franklin Pierce, Adelphi, and SNHU
- The Greyhounds are 4-1 vs. SNHU this season, and lead the all-time series 52-39.
- Colbert struck out two batters to bring her season total to 231.

- The Greyhounds earn the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament while the Penmen look for an at-large bid. The field will be announced Monday at 10:00 a.m. on ncaa.com.
