Men's Basketball Downs New Haven In Season

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Freshman Cory
Vejraska (Alachua, FL) was 5-5 from the floor and 7-7 at
the free throw line en route to 18 points in his collegiate debut
to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 74-57 men's
basketball victory over the University of New Haven Thursday night
at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The game was the season opener for
both schools.
Vejraska, who also finished with
five rebounds, led four players in double figures for the
Penmen. Gerald Carter (Harlem, NY) totaled
13 points and four assists, while Sam Carey
(Manchester, NH) finished with 12 points on 6-7 shooting and also
grabbed eight rebounds. Troy Bowen (Nashua,
NH) also registered 12 points.
Kelvin Jackson and Tetrick Stonar
paced New Haven with 15 points apiece.
Southern New Hampshire led 37-28 at
halftime and opened the second half on a 17-9 run capped by a
Carter three with 14:28 left to make it 54-37. The Penmen
would make it 58-39 with 12:14 left on a pair of Vejraska free
throws before the Chargers scored eight unanswered points to cut
the lead to 11 on a Carl Campbell layup with 6:30 remaining.
UNH would get as close as nine points on Stonar's dunk with
5:22 to go, but the Penmen sealed the win by outscoring the guests
13-2 over the next 3:34 to take a 73-53 lead on a pair of
Chase Miller (Fairfax, VA) free throws.
The Penmen trailed just twice in
the game's opening moments and took the lead for good on a basket
by Chris Brickley (Manchester, NH) just over three
minutes into the game. SNHU would build a 27-11 lead with
just under seven minutes left before intermission before the
Chargers used a 12-4 run capped by a Stonar basket to cut the lead
to 31-23 with just over four minutes on the clock. The Penmen
took a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
SNHU shot 54.5% (12-22) in the
second half and 51% (25-49) for the game while outrebounding the
Chargers 29-24. The Penmen also took 15 more trips to the
free throw line and were 19-28 from the charity stripe as opposed
to UNH's 8-13 effort.
Southern New Hampshire opens
Northeast-10 play Tuesday (November 20) when it hosts Stonehill
College in a 7:30 game at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
