WATERBURY, Conn.. – Sophomore
Jojo Wallace (Milford, Conn.) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team garnered Division II Conference Commissioners Association East All-Region First Team honors Thursday.
Wallace, an NE10 All-Conference First Team selection this season, started 27 of the 28 games he played in, tallying 24.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals per contest, while shooting 47.8 percent (261-546) from the field, including 41.2 percent (61-148) from deep, and 72.4 percent (110-152) at the stripe. Wallace, the March 3 NABC/D2CIDA National Player of the Week, as well as a four-time NE10 Player of the Week (Jan. 26, Feb. 9, Feb. 16, Feb. 23), scored in double figures in all 28 games, including 20 or more 24 times and 30-plus on five occasions. He netted 20-plus points in 16 straight to end the season, averaging 27.5 ppg during the stretch, which included nine performances of 27 or more. The Penmen saved their season by winning seven of their last eight before falling in the NE10 Championship semifinals, with Wallace scoring 30.6 ppg over that period.
Wallace's crown jewel performance came when he led the Penmen to a 96-93, double-overtime victory at Bentley University in the first round of the NE10 postseason with a program- and NE10 Championship-record 48 points that saw him go 19 of 37 from the field, including 6 of 13 from beyond the arc. The 48 points and 37 field goal attempts broke Fred Petty's school records of 47 points and 34 attempts from Feb. 5, 1974, while also eclipsing Drew Adderly's 47-point performance in the NE10 tournament for Assumption University in a game against Stonehill College on March 7, 1992.
Wallace led the NCAA Division II East Region in scoring (by 3.0 ppg), total points (by 62), field goals made (by 29) and field goals attempted (by 79), while ranking second in minutes per game (36:02), eighth in free throws attempted, ninth in free throws made, 11th in 3-pointers made per game (2.18) and total 3-pointers made, and 13th in field goal percentage. Wallace paces the nation in field goals made and field goal attempts, while placing fourth in scoring and seventh in total points. In SNHU's single-season record book, Wallace finished second in total points (693), and fifth in scoring average and field goals made.
Wallace and the Penmen (15-14) finished 8-10 in the NE10 to earn the seventh seed and advanced to the NE10 Championship semifinals for the fourth consecutive season for the first time in program history, but fell short of a chance to defend their two previous NE10 titles.
