HOOKSETT, N.H. - Brandon Hammermeister
(Calgary, ALB) totaled two goals and two assists to lead the
Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 8-5 win over
UMass Boston in the first round of the 13th annual PAL/Stovepipe
Tournament Saturday afternoon at The Ice Den. The Penmen
remain unbeaten at 3-0-1 overall, while the Beacons fall to 0-3-0
overall.
With the win, the Penmen advance to
Sunday's championship game (4:00), where it will square off with
Plymouth State University, a 3-0 winner over Suffolk University in
Saturday's first game. The same two teams met in last
season's final with the Panthers taking away a 7-2 win.
Suffolk and UMB will meet in the consolation game at 1:00.
Ryan DiBartolomeo
(Leominster, MA) registered two goals and an assist for the Penmen,
who got goals from six different players. Eric
Tufman (Abington, PA) led the Beacons with two goals and
an assist.
SNHU jumped out to a 2-0 lead just
3:07 into the game. John Frey (Westminster,
CO) got the Penmen on the board with a power play goal at the 1:27
mark. On another power play, Hammermeister fired a shot that
tipped off a UMass Boston defender and slid into the goal.
After John Galivan (Oak Park, IL) cut the lead to
2-1 with a power play tally for the Beacons, Matt
Farley (Halifax, MA) made it 3-1 as SNHU scored its third
straight power play goal. UMB made it 3-2 at the 16:44 mark
when Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MO) scored with the man
advantage, but the Penmen would reclaim a two-goal advantage 2:17
before intermission on a goal by Ed Montgomery
(Colchester, VT).
UMass Boston would draw to within
5-4 after two periods. SNHU would make it 5-2 at the 12:07
mark of the third period when DiBartolomeo scored. The
Beacons would score twice in a 2:18 span late in the period.
Adam Larrabee (Beverly, MA) scored at the 15:02
mark while Tufman made it 5-4 2:40 before the second intermission.
SNHU would get third period goals
from Troy Maybury (South Portland, ME),
Hammermeister and a DiBartolomeo empty net goal with 1:13
left. Tufman added UMB's fifth goal at the 11:29 mark.
Shane Brooks
(Kennbunk, ME) made 30 saves for SNHU, which was outshot
35-32. Ray Monroe (Shrewsbury, MA) made 11
saves for UMass Boston before giving way to Ryan
Donovan (Rexford, NY) late in the first period.
Donovan finished with 13 stops. The Penmen were 4-6 on the
power play, while UMass Boston was 2-5 with the man advantage.
