HOOKSETT, N.H. - Tournament Most Valuable
Player Karl Helgesson (Lerun, Sweden) stopped 29
of the 30 shots he faced and Plymouth State University scored twice
in the third period as the Panthers captured their third straight
PAL/Stovepipe Tournament title with a 3-1 win over Southern New
Hampshire University in men's hockey at The Ice Den Sunday.
PSU, which becomes the first school to capture three straight
tourney titles in the 13 year history of the event, improves to
2-1-1, while the Penmen suffered their first loss of the season and
are now 3-1-1 overall.
Sunday's game marked the second
straight year Plymouth State and Southern New Hampshire squared off
for the PAL/Stovepipe title. The Panthers took down a 7-2 win
last season.
PSU scored the game-winner 4:18
into the third period on a power play. Deni
Bojadzic (Gotheborg, Sweden) scored from the top of the
left faceoff circle, with David Rose (Haddon
Township, NJ) assisting on the tally. The Panthers would add
an empty net goal with 11 seconds to play when Topo
Lacroix (Moretown, VT) fired into an empty net after SNHU
pulled goalie Todd Rowley (Billerica, MA) with a
minute to play.
Plymouth State scored the lone goal
of the first period with 5:07 remaining before intermission.
Bryan Horrigan (Brookfield, WI) collected a
rebound off the pads of Rowley and fired it home for the 1-0
lead. Jason Butler (Farmington, CT) and
Stephan Davis (Lafayette, CA) assisted on the
tally.
Southern New Hampshire tied the
game in the second period at the 4:59 mark. Brandon
Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB) came down the middle and
fired a shot that beat Helgesson high and to the left.
Josh Goodman (Highland Mills, NY) and Ed
Montgomery (Colchester, VT) assisted on the tally.
Helgesson stopped 29 shots for PSU
while Rowley made 26 stops for SNHU. The Penmen owned a 30-29
shot advantage but were 0-4 on the power play while the Panthers
were 1-6 with the man advantage.
Named to the All-Tournament Team
were Helgesson, Dave Dufresne (Dracut, MA),
Chris Cantara (Pelham, NH) and Kyle
Tobin (Kanta, ONT) of Plymouth State and Hammermeister and
Kent Honeyman (Marietta, GA) of Southern New
Hampshire.
SNHU returns to action Saturday
when it travels to Assumption College for a Northeast-10 match
starting at 7:30.
