SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Sophomore John Frey
(Westminster, CO) totaled a goal and two assists as the Southern
New Hampshire University ice hockey team opened the 2007-08 season
with a 5-3 win over Johnson and Wales University at the Rhode
Island Sports Center Sunday afternoon. The game marked the season
opener for both schools.
The Penmen, who got goals from five
different players in the victory, got a goal and an assist apiece
from senior Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB)
and sophomore Ryan DiBartolomeo (Leominster, MA).
Sophomore Matt Farley (Halifax, MA) and freshman
Troy Maybury (South Portland, ME) notched two
assists apiece, while sophomore Kent Honeyman
(Marietta, GA) and freshman Ed Montgomery
(Colchester, VT) had SNHU's other goals.
SNHU, which held a 3-2 lead after
two periods, scored the eventual game-winner 7:37 into the third
frame when Honeyman scored on assists from Farley and Maybury. The
goal was one of three power play goals on the afternoon for the
Penmen, who were 3-11 with the man advantage.
Johnson and Wales cut the lead back
down to a goal at the 10:04 mark of the third on a Andy Noyes
tally. The Wildcats would try to come up with the equalizer,
pulling goalie Charlie Bacon with 1:16 left, but DiBartolomeo
accounted for the final score by potting an empty net goal with 10
seconds remaining.
Matt McGilvray gave JWU a 1-0 lead
at the 9:00 mark of the first period on a power play goal, but
Hammermeister would tie the score 51 seconds later with Frey
recording an assist. Frey scored on a power play 4:18 into the
second to make it 2-1, and SNHU would take a 3-1 lead at the 8:07
mark on Montgomery's power play tally. The hosts would cut the
Penmen advantage in half 2:38 before the second intermission on a
Joe Simeone goal.

(Bow, NH) made 27 saves en route to the win as Southern New
Hampshire outshot Johnson and Wales 35-30. JWU, which was 1-7 on
the power play, got 30 saves from Bacon.
Southern New Hampshire hosts its
home opener Tuesday, November 13, when it hosts Western New England
College in a 7:30 game at The Ice Den.
