Men's Basketball Writes Off UMass Lowell 67-47

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sam Carey (Manchester, NH) and Gerald
Carter (Harlem, NY) each recorded double-doubles to lead Southern
New Hampshire University to a 67-47 Northeast-10 men's basketball
victory over UMass Lowell at the SNHU Fieldhouse Wednesday
night. The Penmen improved to 11-9 overall and 8-7 in league
play, while the River Hawks are now 7-11 and 5-9 in the league.
Carter finished with 14 points and
11 rebounds, while Carey added 14 points and 10 boards. They
were two of four Penmen in double figures. Troy
Bowen (Nashua, NH) was 3-3 from three-point land and
totaled 15 points, while Cory Vejraska (Alachua,
FL) also totaled 15 points. Chase Miller
(Fairfax, VA) handed out five assists.
Dashon Harper was the lone River
Hawk in double figures as he totaled 17 points on 7-12 shooting.
SNHU never trailed in the contest
and opened a 12-3 lead just 6:11 into the contest following a
three-pointer by Bowen. The River Hawks would whittle the
lead down to six, 18-12, with eight minutes to go before
intermission on a Harper trifecta, but the Penmen responded with an
11-2 run and a layup by Vejraska with 3:38 left in the half made it
29-14. The guests would close the stanza on a 7-2 spurt and a
Michael Gore basket 33 seconds before the break made it 31-21 at
halftime.
The Penmen scored the first six
points of the second half and outscored UMass Lowell 17-4 over the
first nine minutes of the second half to take a 48-25 lead on a
three by Carter. The hosts responded by scoring seven
straight and a Harper layup with 9:09 on the clock made it
48-32. The River Hawks would get the lead down to 15, 52-37,
with 6:34 left on a three by Kevin Carr, but SNHU reeled off an
11-2 run to put the game away, with a pair of Kelly
Coder (Exeter, NH) free throws with 4:43 left making it
63-39.
Southern New Hampshire shot 52.6%
in the second half and 44.7% for the game while holding UMass
Lowell to just 30.5% shooting for the contest. The Penmen
made eight of their 13 three-point attempts and were 17-23 at the
free throw line while also holding a commanding 47-28 rebounding
advantage.
SNHU returns to action Saturday
when it hosts Assumption College in a 3:30 pm contest at the
SNHU Fieldhouse.
