HOOKSETT, N.H. - Domenic Recchia totaled two goals,
including the game winner with 36 seconds left in overtime, and
added an assist as Johnson and Wales University bested Southern New
Hampshire University 6-5 in ice hockey Saturday afternoon at The
Ice Den. The Wildcats improved to 4-1 on the season, while
the Penmen are 2-1.
Joe Simeone also scored twice for
JWU, which also got a goal and two assists from Mike O'Malley and a
goal from Jimmy Van Asch. Troy Maybury
(South Portland, ME) scored twice to lead Southern New Hampshire,
which also got goals from Dave Carroll (Arlington,
MA), John Frey (Westminster, CO) and Jake
Berube (Spotsylvania, VA). Bob
Bryant (Nashua, NH) and Jonathan Santos
(Lynnfield, MA) each collected two assists.
The Wildcats scored on the power
play after Maybury was whistled for tripping at the 3:03 mark of
overtime. Marchesi scored on assists from O'Malley and
Jeremiah Ketts.
Tied 3-3 after two periods, the
Penmen broke the deadlock 1:39 into the third when Maybury scored
on assists from Mark Smith (Ronkonkoma, NY) and
Bryant. Van Asch scored for JWU 2:24 later, but the
Penmen would retake the lead at the 5:45 mark when Frey scored on a
power play. Simeone registered the final goal of regulation
for the Wildcats at the 10:20 mark.
Johnson and Wales got power play
goals from O'Malley and Marchesi to take a 2-1 lead into the first
intermission. The Penmen scored 55 seconds apart in the
second to take a 3-2 lead, with Carroll scoring at 12:28 and Berube
at 13:23. Simeone would tie the game 4:10 before the second
intermission.
JR Woodland made 27 saves in goal
for Johnson and Wales as it outshot Southern New Hampshire
34-32. John DeSangro (Falmouth, MA) got the
start in goal for the Penmen and made eight saves in the first
period before giving way to Shane Brooks
(Kennebunk, ME), who made 20 saves over the final two periods and
overtime. JWU was 5-8 on the power play while the Penmen were
2-8 with the man advantage.
Southern New Hampshire is idle
until next Saturday when it faces UMass Boston in the first round
of the PAL/Stovepipe Tournament. Faceoff at The Ice Den is
set for 4:00.
