Merrimack Races Past Men's Basketball 89-71

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Darren Duncan led four Merrimack College players in double figures with 20 points it posted an 89-71 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 men's basketball Monday night at the Volpe Center.  The Warriors, who were picked second in the NE-10 preseason poll, improved to 5-0 and 3-0 in league play, while the Penmen are now 2-1 and 1-1 in the NE-10.

Duncan was 10-11 from the free throw line while also dishing out 13 assists.  Roland Davis drained three three-pointers and totaled 15 points, while Darin Mency and David Kennedy added 14 and 13 points, respectively.  Kennedy also grabbed seven rebounds.

Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens, NY) led Southern New Hampshire with 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds while also handing out four assists.  Tory Stapleton (Rahway, NJ) added 12 points on 5-10 shooting, while Marcus Matthews (Valley Stream, NY) had a season-best 10 points.

Merrimack never trailed over the first 20 minutes and opened up a 17-6 lead six minutes in following a three-pointer by David Kennedy.  The Penmen cut the lead to 17-10 on a layup by Wood, but the Warriors scored the next seven points to take a 24-10 lead at the 11:13 mark on a three by Craig Woehnker.  Merrimack took its largest lead of the first half, 34-18, on a layup by Duncan 3:27 before halftime and held a 40-29 lead at the break.

The Penmen used a 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Lucas Croteau (Rochester, NH) at the 12:33 mark of the second half to cut the Merrimack lead to seven, 56-49.  SNHU would cut the lead to seven two more times but got no closer as it traded baskets with the hosts.  The Warriors would put the game away with a late 12-2 run that gave them a 81-63 lead on a layup by Duncan with 2:48 to play.

Merrimack shot 54% in the game, including 11-25 (44%) from three-point range, while the Penmen were 2-19 behind the arc.  The Warriors also outrebounded Southern New Hampshire 40-36.

SNHU is idle until Sunday when it hosts Stonehill for a 3:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
