MANCHESTER, N.H. - UMass Boston jumped
out to a 4-0 lead after one period and posted a 6-3 ice hockey win
over Southern New Hampshire University in the first round of the
PAL/Stovepipe Tournament Saturday at The Ice Den. The
Beacons, who advance to Sunday's championship game against Tufts,
improve to 2-1-1, while the Penmen, who face Plymouth State in
Sunday's 1:00 consolation, are now 2-2 on the season.
Brett Calhoun led UMass Boston with
a pair of goals, while Eric Tufman and Matt Atsoff each tallied a
goal and an assist. Jeff Van Siclen and Zach Barron had the
other Beacon goals, while Kris Kranzky handed out three assists.
Dave Carroll
(Arlington, MA), John Frey (Westminster, CO) and
Andrew Hildreth (Leominster, MA) each totaled a
goal and an assist for the Penmen, while Ryan
DiBartolomeo (Leominster, MA) registered a pair of assists
on the afternoon.
UMass Boston jumped out to a 3-0
lead midway through the first period when it scored three times in
a span of 3:07, with Brett Calhoun's power play goal at the 12:23
mark making it 3-0. The Beacons made it 4-0 while killing off
a five-minute major at the 16:32 mark on Barron's short-handed
tally.
The Penmen got on the board at the
11:39 mark of the second period when Carroll scored off assists
from Frey and DiBartolomeo. Frey made it a 4-2 game at the
16:17 mark, but UMass Boston would reclaim a three-goal advantage
42 seconds later when Tufman tipped home a shot from the point by
Gentry Zollars.
Calhoun would record his second
goal of the game at the 10:23 mark of the third. Hildreth
would close out the scoring at the 13:22 mark when he scored on a
power play, with Kent Honeyman (Marietta, GA) and
Carroll recording assists.
Ryan Donovan turned aside 34 shots
for UMass Boston in goal en route to the win. Todd
Rowley (Billerica, MA) played the final 47:37 in goal for
the Penmen and made 16 saves while allowing four goals. He
came in in relief of SNHU starter Shane Brooks
(Kennebunk, ME), who allowed three goals over the first 12:23 and
made two saves. The hosts held a 37-25 shot advantage and
were 1-7 on the power play, while the Beacons were 1-5.
