BOX SCORE
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Tournament Most Outstanding Player
Matt Delaney (Wallasey, England) scored the game's
only goal in the 19th minute to lead second-seeded
Southern New Hampshire University to a 1-0 win over No. 4 seed Le
Moyne College in the title game of the Northeast-10 Men's Soccer
Championship Saturday at Larkin Field. The Penmen, who are
ranked No. 13 nationally, improved to 15-2-4, while the Dolphins
are now 13-5-3 overall.
SNHU captured its third NE-10
Tournament title in program history, as it also won the tournament
in 2000 and 2002. Le Moyne was also making its third NE-10
Tournament final appearance.
The winner of the Northeast-10
Tournament does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division
II Tournament, however both teams have strong chances to be
included in the 24-team field when it is announced Monday
night. The Penmen entered the game ranked first in the latest
NCAA East Region ranking, while the Dolphins were fourth.
The game's lone goal came at the
18:25 mark of the first half on a corner kick. Kevin
Woods (Alyth, Scotland) delivered a long left-to-right
corner kick in front of the goal. Adrian
Schippers (Ashby, MA) headed the ball back to Delaney, who
scored on a diving header that Le Moyne keeper Steve White had no
chance on.
SNHU keeper Sean
Lambert (Rehoboth, MA) was not forced to make a save as he
recorded his 11th shutout of the season and third in the
tournament. With their 15th team shutout of the
season, the Penmen tied a team record for shutouts in a
season. White registered three saves for Le Moyne, who were
outshot 12-7.
Delaney, Woods and Richard
Kentish (Kingston, Jamaica) were all named to the
Northeast-10 All-Tournament team for the Penmen.
