DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens,
NY) finished with career highs in points (23) and rebounds (14) to
lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 71-65 men's basketball
victory over Mercy College Saturday afternoon. The Penmen won
their third in a row to improve to 5-3, while the Mavericks remain
searching for their first win of the year and are now 0-7.
Wood, who was 7-13 from the floor,
also added three steals and a pair of assists. Tory
Stapleton (Rahway, NJ) finished with nine points and 12
rebounds while Kelly Coder (Exeter, NH) was 4-6
from the floor and added eight points for the Penmen.
Josh Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, MD) registered
seven points and five steals. Justin McMullen led Mercy with
17 points while Ed Wilson and Jimmy Gunville totaled 16 and 12
points, respectively.
SNHU and Mercy traded the lead 13
times in a see-saw first half that saw neither team lead by more
than four points. The Penmen scored the game's first four
points, while Mercy led by four on four occasions, the last coming
on a Wilson basket with 2:35 before halftime that made it
31-27. SNHU scored the final four points of the first half
and a layup by Coder with two seconds left tied the game at 31 at
halftime.
The Penmen used an 8-0 run midway
through the second half to take a 50-43 lead with 11:24 to play
following a layup by Wood. The Mavericks would tie the game
54-54 with 6:18 to go when Gunville was fouled making a three and
converted the free throw. With the game tied 60-60, Southern
New Hampshire used a 7-0 spurt to take a 67-60 lead with 54 seconds
left when Wood made 1-of-2 at the line.
Mercy would pull to within two,
67-65, with 37 seconds left. McMullen converted a
conventional three-point play with 44 seconds left, then following
a steal, Wilson would make two at the line to make it 67-65.
From there, the Penmen would go 4-6 at the free throw line and the
Mavericks would come up empty on their final three possessions of
the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire won despite
shooting just 33.8% from the floor and going just 2-26 from
three-point land. The Penmen generated 16 more trips to the
free throw line than Mercy (38-22) and were 25-38 while the
Mavericks were 16-22 from the stripe. SNHU outrebounded its
hosts 45-37, including a 23-10 advantage on the offensive glass
that led to 19 second chance points.
Southern New Hampshire is idle
until next Saturday when it hosts Nyack College in a 2:00 contest
at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
