DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens, NY) finished with career highs in points (23) and rebounds (14) to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 71-65 men's basketball victory over Mercy College Saturday afternoon.  The Penmen won their third in a row to improve to 5-3, while the Mavericks remain searching for their first win of the year and are now 0-7.

Wood, who was 7-13 from the floor, also added three steals and a pair of assists.  Tory Stapleton (Rahway, NJ) finished with nine points and 12 rebounds while Kelly Coder (Exeter, NH) was 4-6 from the floor and added eight points for the Penmen.  Josh Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, MD) registered seven points and five steals.  Justin McMullen led Mercy with 17 points while Ed Wilson and Jimmy Gunville totaled 16 and 12 points, respectively.

SNHU and Mercy traded the lead 13 times in a see-saw first half that saw neither team lead by more than four points.  The Penmen scored the game's first four points, while Mercy led by four on four occasions, the last coming on a Wilson basket with 2:35 before halftime that made it 31-27.  SNHU scored the final four points of the first half and a layup by Coder with two seconds left tied the game at 31 at halftime.

The Penmen used an 8-0 run midway through the second half to take a 50-43 lead with 11:24 to play following a layup by Wood.  The Mavericks would tie the game 54-54 with 6:18 to go when Gunville was fouled making a three and converted the free throw.  With the game tied 60-60, Southern New Hampshire used a 7-0 spurt to take a 67-60 lead with 54 seconds left when Wood made 1-of-2 at the line.

Mercy would pull to within two, 67-65, with 37 seconds left.  McMullen converted a conventional three-point play with 44 seconds left, then following a steal, Wilson would make two at the line to make it 67-65.  From there, the Penmen would go 4-6 at the free throw line and the Mavericks would come up empty on their final three possessions of the afternoon.

Southern New Hampshire won despite shooting just 33.8% from the floor and going just 2-26 from three-point land.  The Penmen generated 16 more trips to the free throw line than Mercy (38-22) and were 25-38 while the Mavericks were 16-22 from the stripe.  SNHU outrebounded its hosts 45-37, including a 23-10 advantage on the offensive glass that led to 19 second chance points.

Southern New Hampshire is idle until next Saturday when it hosts Nyack College in a 2:00 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
