KEENE, N.H. - Visiting Southern New Hampshire University
allowed just 10 first half points as it posted a 65-51 victory over
Franklin Pierce University Saturday afternoon at Keene State
College's Spaulding Gymnasium. The Penmen snapped a
three-game slide as it improve to 3-3 and 2-3 in the NE-10, while
the Ravens are now 4-3 and 1-2 in the league.
Tory Stapleton
(Rahway, NJ) led Southern New Hampshire with 16 points on 7-12
shooting. Freshman Marcus Matthews (Valley
Stream, NY) finished with 13 points, six rebounds and three
assists, while Troy Bowen (Nashua, NH) and
Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens, NY) each added
10 points. Gerald Carter (Harlem, NY)
narrowly missed a double-double, registering nine points while
grabbing 12 rebounds and making four steals.
Kinard Dozier led Franklin Pierce
with 12 points while Jeff Manchester added 11 points.
The Penmen did not allow a Franklin
Pierce field goal over the final 11:07 of the first half following
a Mike Barrow basket that made it 12-8. FPU missed its final
10 field goal attempts of the half as the Penmen outscored the
Ravens 16-2. The Ravens went scoreless for nearly 10 minutes,
not scoring until Manchester made 1-of-2 at the line with 1:35
before halftime to make it 26-9. SNHU took its largest lead
of the half, 28-9, 1:18 before intermission on Wood's layup and led
28-10 at the break.
SNHU scored the first four points
of the second half and extended the lead to 32-10 on a layup by
Carter. Franklin Pierce broke the field goal drought at the
17:43 mark on a three-pointer by Manchester. The Penmen would
maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way, with the Ravens
closing to within 12 with 1:30 to play.
Franklin Pierce shot just 20% in
the first half while misfiring on all six of its three-point
attempts. For the game the Ravens shot just 31%. The
Penmen were just 36.1% from the floor and 16-29 from the free throw
line while outrebounding the Ravens 45-44.
SNHU hosts New Haven in a 7:30
contest on Tuesday.
