Men's Basketball Charges Past New Haven 69-55

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Tory Stapleton (Rahway, NJ) finished with 17 points as Southern New Hampshire University defeated the University of New Haven 69-55 in Northeast-10 men's basketball Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Penmen won their second straight to improve to 4-3 and 3-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Chargers saw a three-game win streak snapped and are now 3-5 and 3-4 in the league.

Stapleton was 8-14 from the floor and also grabbed five rebounds.  Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens, NY) finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Cory Vejraska (Alachua, FL) totaled 15 points for SNHU on 6-9 shooting.  D.J. Sackmann totaled 12 points to lead New Haven while Cassius Chaney added 11 points.

Southern New Hampshire opened up an 11-4 lead seven minutes into the game following a layup by Vejraska and led 17-14 when it went on a 10-0 run to take a 27-17 lead with 3:44 before halftime on a Bowen free throw.  The Penmen took their largest lead of the first half with 33 seconds left when Wood made his second three-pointer of the first half to make it 34-19, which would be the halftime score.

The Penmen gradually pulled away in the second half and took their largest lead, 54-32, with 10:10 left on a layup by Stapleton.  The Penmen led 60-41 with 4:04 left before UNH scored 10 unanswered points to cut the lead to nine, 60-51, with a minute to play following a Sackmann basket.  The Chargers drew as close as eight points, but SNHU sealed the win by going 8-8 at the charity stripe over the final 39 seconds.

Southern New Hampshire shot 60.9% in the first half and 52.3% for the game while connecting on eight of its 14 (57.1%) three-point attempts.  The Chargers shot 41.2% for the game but were just 8-21 at the free throw line as opposed to the Penmen's 15-23 effort.  SNHU held a 32-30 rebounding advantage.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it travels to Mercy College for a 12:00 game.
