Carey's Career-High 32 Not Enough on Senior

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Despite a career-high 32 points from
senior Sam Carey (Manchester, NH) in his final
regular season home game for Southern New Hampshire University, the
Penmen were edged 78-75 by Le Moyne College Tuesday evening at the
SNHU Fieldhouse in Northeast-10 men's basketball. Le Moyne
moved to 14-12 overall and 12-9 in NE-10 play, while the Penmen are
12-13 and 9-11 in the league.
Carey, who scored 23 of his points
in the second half, finished 12-20 from the floor and 8-9 at the
free throw line. Gerald Carter (Harlem, NY)
totaled 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Penmen,
who also got 10 points from Troy Bowen (Nashua,
NH).
Laurence Ekperigin led five Le
Moyne players in double figures with 17 points. Damani Corbin
totaled 16 points on 7-9 shooting, while Dan Cromwell added 12
points. Jonathan Joshua and Matt Vassil registered 11 points
apiece.
Le Moyne led the entire second half
and went up 73-62 with 4:08 remaining on a pair of free throws by
Jason Holmes. The Penmen would chip away at the lead and
back-to-back conventional three-point plays by Carey, the second
with 1:25 left, cut the lead to two, 74-72. After the two
teams traded empty trips, Joshua would be fouled with 39 seconds
left and made one of two to make it 75-72. The Penmen would
turn it over on their next possession and Corbin made one of two at
the line to make it 76-72.
SNHU would cut the lead to one,
76-75, with 17.2 seconds to go when Fotis Lioutas
(Thessaloniki, Greece) hit a fallaway three from the right
corner. The Penmen got a foul on the inbounds but Joshua sank
both to push the lead to three. The Penmen turned it over on
their final possession and Corbin was fouled with 0.1 seconds
remaining but missed both free throws.
The two teams traded the lead four
times in the first 10 minutes before Le Moyne took control with a
11-0 run capped by a Corbin layup at the 8:20 mark that made it
29-20. The Penmen got the lead down to four, 33-29, with 3:20
before halftime on a Carter basket. The Dolphins would own a
41-36 lead at halftime.
Southern New Hampshire got the lead
down to two, 43-41, early in the second half on a Lioutas three but
Le Moyne countered with a 11-3 run that made it 54-44 with 14:42
left on a Joshua three. The guests would maintain at least a
six-point advantage until the game's final moments.
Le Moyne shot a sizzling 65.1% from
the floor for the contest and connected on five of its 12
three-point attempts. Southern New Hampshire was 8-18 from
three-point land and held a 30-20 rebounding advantage that led to
a 26-2 advantage in second chance points.
SNHU returns to action on Saturday
when it travels to Assumption College for a 3:30 contest.
