Greyhounds Race Past Men's Basketball 76-70

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Courtland Bluford finished with 19
points and nine rebounds to lead Assumption College to a 76-70
Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire
University at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The
Greyhounds, who entered the game ranked No. 2 in the Northeast,
improved to 17-6 overall and 11-5 in NE-10 play, while the Penmen
are now 11-10 and 8-8 in the league.
Bluford finished 7-13 from the
floor and was successful on both of his three-point attempts.
Corey Diethorn finished with 14 points, while Mike Baldarelli added
11. Sam Carey (Manchester, NH) led Southern
New Hampshire with 16 points on 6-8 shooting and seven
rebounds. Troy Bowen (Nashua, NH) finished
with 15 points and five assists, while Gerald
Carter (Harlem, NY) and Chase Miller
(Fairfax, VA) totaled 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Assumption led 38-32 at halftime
and extended that lead to 40-32 moments into the second half.
The Penmen would chip away at the lead and a three by Fotis
Lioutas (Thessaloniki, Greece) with 12:34 left tied the
game at 48-48. SNHU would tie the game two more times, the
last at 58-all with 7:46 left on a Bowen three, but the Greyhounds
used a 10-3 run to take a 68-61 lead with 3:11 to go on a Mitch
Bajema three. The Penmen got as close as four points on a
Miller three with 24 seconds left, but Assumption went 4-6 at the
line in the game's waning moments to seal the win.
In a first half that saw six ties
and six lead changes, SNHU took an early 14-8 lead just over six
minutes into the game on a Lioutas three. The Greyhounds
seized control late, scoring eight unanswered points in a
two-minute span to take a 36-29 lead on a Mike Foti three with 1:18
before intermission. Assumption would go into the locker room
with a 38-32 lead.
SNHU held a 39-33 rebounding
advantage but committed 15 turnovers that led to 14 Assumption
points. The Penmen were 50% (10-20) behind the arc and 20-28
(71.4%) at the free throw line, but Assumption took 12 more field
goal attempts and was 9-21 behind the arc itself.
SNHU returns to action Tuesday
night when it travels to The College of Saint Rose for a 7:30
contest.
