HOOKSETT, N.H. - A goal by Brandon
Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB) with 1:53 remaining lifted
Southern New Hampshire University to a 5-4 Northeast-10 hockey
victory over Franklin Pierce University at The Ice Den Saturday
afternoon. The win, which assured the Penmen a quarterfinal
home game in the NE-10 Tournament that starts next Saturday,
improves SNHU's record to 11-11-1 and 3-2 in the NE-10. The
Ravens now stand at 6-18-0 and 1-4 in the league.
Hammermeister was one of three
players to total a goal and an assist for SNHU. Josh
Goodman (Highland Mills, NY) and Bob
Bryant (Nashua, NH) also totaled a goal and an assist,
while Michael Sabo (South Windsor, CT) notched a
pair of assists. Kent Honeyman (Marietta,
GA) and John Frey (Westminster, CO) also had
Penmen goals.
Casey Goodell led Franklin Pierce
with a pair of goals.
SNHU, which trailed 1-0 after one
period and was tied 2-2 after two, appeared to take control of the
contest with two goals in the first 1:24 of the final frame to take
a 4-2 lead. Goodman gave the Penmen their first lead of the
contest just 48 seconds into the third, with Andrew
Goduco (Marlboro, MA) and Sabo assisting. 36 seconds
later, Bryant would give the hosts a 4-2 lead, with Hammermeister
and Goodman assisting on the tally.
Franklin Pierce, which has not
beaten SNHU in 13 tries all-time (0-12-1), would rally with a pair
of goals in the third. Sean Woodring halved the Penmen
advantage at the 5:03 mark on a power play tally, then Joseph
Fields tied the score at the 9:40 mark. Hammermeister would
notch the game-winner, his 14th goal of the season, at the 18:07
mark, with Troy Maybury (South Portland, ME) and
Bryant registering assists on the goal.
The Ravens jumped out to a 1-0 lead
when Goodell scored a power play goal off a rebound at the 15:45
mark of the first period. That would remain the score until
Goodell's second goal 8:03 into the second period gave Franklin
Pierce a 2-0 lead. SNHU would tie the game with a pair of
goals in a 1:35 span. Frey scored his 13th goal of the season
at the 9:11 mark, with Ryan DiBartolomeo
(Leominster, MA) and Phil LaCasse (Concord, NH)
assisting. Honeyman would tie the game at the 10:46 mark on
assists from Sabo and Brandon Sheehan (Bedford,
MA).
Shane Brooks
(Kennebunk, ME) turned aside 24 of the 28 shots he faced en route
to the win for SNHU. Jon Tuttle made 20 saves for Franklin Pierce,
which outshot SNHU 28-25.
SNHU returns to action Monday night
when it travels to Suffolk University for a 7:00 contest in the
regular season finale.
