MANCHESTER, N.H. - Freshman goalkeeper Joey
Kapinos (Ludlow, MA) made three saves en route to his
first collegiate shutout as Southern New Hampshire University
posted a 3-0 men's soccer victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas College
at Larkin Field Saturday afternoon. The Penmen upped their
record to 3-1-0 on the season, while the Spartans now sit at 0-1-1
overall.
The Penmen would score all three of
their goals in the first half. Southern New Hampshire would
get on the board just 1:56 in when it was awarded a penalty kick
after Daniel Hernandez (Salem, NH) was hauled down
in the box by a Spartan defender. Kevin
Woods (Alyth, Scotland) converted the penalty kick to give
SNHU the 1-0 advantage.
At the 18:16 mark, the hosts made
it 2-0 when Adrian Schippers (Ashby, MA) scored on
a beautiful diving header off a right-to-left crossing pass by
Jamie Phillips (Hampton, NH). Hernandez also
assisted on the goal. The Penmen made it 3-0 52 seconds
before intermission when Brendan Joseph (Bedford, NH) collected a
ball popped into the box by Jayme Kapinos (Ludlow,
MA) and one-timed it past Saint Thomas Aquinas keeper
Andrew Tartara (Bardonia, NY).
Joey Kapinos, who was making his
first career start, made all three of his saves in the first half
as his team outshot the Spartans 22-4. Tartara went the
opening 45 minutes in goal and turned aside five shots before
giving way to Nick Croce (Mahopac, NY), who made
one save in the second half.
Over its first four contests, SNHU
has outshot opponents 68-18 and allowed just one goal while posting
three shutouts.
Southern New Hampshire opens
Northeast-10 play Wednesday night when it hosts Saint Michael's
College in a 7:00 contest at Larkin Field.
