SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Isiah
Wallace finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead American
International College to a 62-59 Northeast-10 men's basketball
victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Butova Gymnasium
Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-7 and 7-6 in
the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 8-9 and 4-8 in the league.
Wallace was 7-11 from the floor and
led three AIC players in double figures. Lucius Millinder
totaled 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Aikeem
Vanderhorst added 12 points and seven boards. Tory Stapleton
(Rahway, NJ) and Troy
Bowen (Nashua, NH) paced Southern New Hampshire with
11 points apiece, while Stephen Wood
(South Jamaica Queens, NY) added 10 points for the Penmen.
In a second half that saw five lead
changes and neither side leading by more than five points, the
Penmen scored six straight points to take a 49-45 lead with 4:33
left on a basket by James Roman (Pelham,
NH). The Yellow Jackets responded with seven straight points
of their own and a pair of free throws by Vanderhorst with 2:26
left made it 52-49.
American International led 58-54
with 33 seconds left when Vanderhorst converted a pair at the
line. On SNHU's next possession, Josh Morgan-Green
(Upper Marlboro, MD) scored with 23 seconds left and was fouled,
converting the three-point play to cut the lead to one. The
Penmen fouled Vanderhorst and he sank two more free throws with 21
seconds left. A three by Bowen on SNHU's next possession was
off the mark, and after Adrian Hynes-Guery made 1-of-2 at the line,
SNHU's Gerald
Carter (Harlem, NY) scored with two seconds left to
make it 61-59. Sesoo Ikpah then made a free throw to account
for the final.
SNHU led 26-23 at halftime and
extended its lead to 30-25 early in the second half before AIC
scored nine in a row to take a 34-30 lead at the 16-minute mark on
a basket by Wallace. The Penmen reclaimed the lead with just
over nine minutes to play on a three by Cory Vejraska
(Alachua, FL) that made it 43-41.
AIC held an 18-10 lead with 8:35
left in the first half before the Penmen went on a 14-0 run capped
by a pair of free throws by Wood at the 4:26 mark that made it
24-18. SNHU held a 26-23 lead despite not recording a field
goal over the final 4:55 of the first half.
AIC took 11 more trips to the free
throw line and were 20-29 at the charity stripe as opposed to
SNHU's 12-18 effort. The Yellow Jackets committed just eight
turnovers and outrebounded the Penmen 35-32.
