MANCHESTER, N.H. -
Sophomore goalkeeper Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.)
turned aside two of the five penalty kicks he faced in a shootout
as Southern New Hampshire University advanced to the second round
of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship, besting Southern
Connecticut State University 4-3 in penalty kicks at Larkin Field
Thursday evening after the two teams played to a 0-0, double
overtime draw.
SNHU, the No. 3 seed in the East
Region, is now 13-4-3 overall and advances to face second-seeded
Wilmington (Del.) University on Saturday at 1:00 at SNHU's Larkin
Field. The Owls, the No. 6 seed, see their season come to a
close at 14-5-2. The game is officially recorded as a tie in
the standings.
The Owls would go first in the
shootout, and both teams would convert their first shot, with
SCSU's Paul Templeton and SNHU's Richard Kentish
(Kingston, Jamaica) both converting. The Owls' next shooter,
Frank Lara, would see his attempt turned aside by Kapinos, while
SNHU's Jayme Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) would convert
to give the Penmen a 2-1 lead.
Both teams made their third and
fourth attempts, with a successful penalty kick by SNHU's
Paul D'Angelo (Gloucester, Mass.) in the fourth
round assuring SNHU of at least a tie in the initial round of five
PKs. The Penmen wouldn't need their fifth shooter, as Victor
Hernandez's attempt was stopped by Joey Kapinos.
Southern New Hampshire carried play
for much of the contest, outshooting the Owls 21-5, including a
18-3 advantage in the second half and the two overtime
periods. Southern Connecticut keeper Chris Rybacki made eight
saves, while Joey Kapinos turned aside one shot.
SNHU and Wilmington met in the
regular season, with the Penmen posting a 1-0 win over the Wildcats
back on September 5 at Larkin Field.
