MANCHESTER, N.H. - Four players totaled 10 points
apiece to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 62-51
Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Saint Anselm College at
the SNHU Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The Penmen improved to
2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10, while the Hawks are now 1-1 and
0-1 in the league.
Cory Vejraska
(Alachua, Fla.) registered 10 points and eight rebounds to lead
Southern New Hampshire, while also coming up with three steals,
while Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) added 10
points and seven boards. Marcus Matthews
(Valley Stream, N.Y.) notched 10 points, while freshman
Corey Boland (Union, N.J.) scored nine of his 10
points in the first half. Freshman Greg
DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) added nine points and seven
assists, while Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens,
N.Y.) grabbed 10 rebounds.
Greg Vetrano led all scorers with
15 points for Saint Anselm, while Hakeem Williams and Thomas
Baudinet each totaled eight points for the Hawks.
Southern New Hampshire trailed just
once, at 3-2, and built a 17-8 lead midway through the first half
on a basket by Boland. The Hawks scored the next seven points
and a three by Pat Luptowski cut the Penmen lead to two, 17-15,
with 7:54 to go in the first half. The Penmen countered with
a 7-0 spurt of their own and a layup by Wood with 5:05 before
intermission made it 24-15. The hosts carried a 28-21 lead
into halftime.
The Penmen outscored the Hawks 15-2
over the first 5:43 of the second half and a layup by Matthews gave
Southern New Hampshire a 43-23 lead. Saint Anselm used a 10-1
run to knock the lead down to 10, 45-35, with 8:24 left on a basket
by Baudinet, but the Penmen would maintain a double-digit advantage
until Baudinet converted free throws with just under four minutes
left to make it 51-43.
Saint Anselm got the lead down to
seven twice, the last time a Vetrano three with 1:07 left making it
56-49, but the Penmen would go 6-6 at the charity stripe the rest
of the way to seal the victory.
Neither team shot the ball well
(SNHU 19-63; Saint Anselm 19-64), but the Penmen would make the
most of their 26 trips to the foul line, going 23-26, while the
Hawks were 10-14 at the stripe. Southern New Hampshire
outrebounded Saint Anselm 49-41.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday, November 24, when it travels to UMass Lowell for a
7:30 contest.
