Men's Basketball Outlasts Saint Anselm 62-51

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Four players totaled 10 points apiece to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 62-51 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Saint Anselm College at the SNHU Fieldhouse Wednesday night.  The Penmen improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10, while the Hawks are now 1-1 and 0-1 in the league.

Cory Vejraska (Alachua, Fla.) registered 10 points and eight rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire, while also coming up with three steals, while Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) added 10 points and seven boards.  Marcus Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) notched 10 points, while freshman Corey Boland (Union, N.J.) scored nine of his 10 points in the first half.  Freshman Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) added nine points and seven assists, while Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens, N.Y.) grabbed 10 rebounds.

Greg Vetrano led all scorers with 15 points for Saint Anselm, while Hakeem Williams and Thomas Baudinet each totaled eight points for the Hawks.

Southern New Hampshire trailed just once, at 3-2, and built a 17-8 lead midway through the first half on a basket by Boland.  The Hawks scored the next seven points and a three by Pat Luptowski cut the Penmen lead to two, 17-15, with 7:54 to go in the first half.  The Penmen countered with a 7-0 spurt of their own and a layup by Wood with 5:05 before intermission made it 24-15.  The hosts carried a 28-21 lead into halftime.

The Penmen outscored the Hawks 15-2 over the first 5:43 of the second half and a layup by Matthews gave Southern New Hampshire a 43-23 lead.  Saint Anselm used a 10-1 run to knock the lead down to 10, 45-35, with 8:24 left on a basket by Baudinet, but the Penmen would maintain a double-digit advantage until Baudinet converted free throws with just under four minutes left to make it 51-43.

Saint Anselm got the lead down to seven twice, the last time a Vetrano three with 1:07 left making it 56-49, but the Penmen would go 6-6 at the charity stripe the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Neither team shot the ball well (SNHU 19-63; Saint Anselm 19-64), but the Penmen would make the most of their 26 trips to the foul line, going 23-26, while the Hawks were 10-14 at the stripe.  Southern New Hampshire outrebounded Saint Anselm 49-41.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday, November 24, when it travels to UMass Lowell for a 7:30 contest.
