UMass Lowell Shuts Down Men's Basketball in 61-47 Win

LOWELL, Mass. - Kyle Caiola totaled 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists to lead UMass Lowell to a 61-47 Northeast-10 men's basketball win over Southern New Hampshire University at the Costello Athletic Center Tuesday night.  The River Hawks remained unbeaten at 4-0 and 2-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen are now 2-1 and 1-1 in the league.

Caiola was 8-15 from the floor, including 2-4 behind the arc.  Scott Tavares-Taylor finished with nine points for the River Hawks, while Romeo Diaz and Craig Heatherly added six points apiece.

Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens, N.Y.) led Southern New Hampshire with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) and Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) added 10 points apiece.

SNHU trailed 29-16 at halftime and by as many as 14 early in the second half, but the Penmen used a 12-2 run capped by a layup by Stapleton with just over 14 minutes left to pull within four, 34-30.  The guests got as close as three, 37-34, with 10:47 remaining on a pair of free throws by Corey Boland (Union, N.J.).  UMass Lowell then reeled off 11 unanswered points to take a 48-34 lead with 7:27 left on a layup by Marcus Johnson.  The River Hawks maintained at least a 12-point advantage the rest of the way.

The Penmen led just once, with DeSantis hitting a three 30 seconds into the game to give the guests a 3-0 lead.  UMass Lowell built a 14-5 lead 7:23 into the first half following a Caiola three-pointer.  SNHU got within six, 16-10, with 4:31 left on a pair of free throws by Matthews, but the River Hawks closed the first half on a 8-1 run to take a 29-16 lead to the locker room.

UMass Lowell limited Southern New Hampshire to just three field goals in the first half and held the Penmen to 28.8% shooting for the game.  The River Hawks outrebounded the Penmen 41-34 on the night.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Sunday when it travels to ninth-ranked Bentley University for a 3:30 contest.
