Penn State Pushes Past SNHU in PAL/Stovepipe Hockey Tournament

BOX SCORE

HOOKSETT, N.H. - Visiting Penn State University scored three times in the third period to post a 5-2 win over Southern New Hampshire University in the opening round of the Manchester Police Athletic League (PAL)/Stovepipe hockey tournament Saturday at The Ice Den.  The Nittany Lions (13-1-1) advance to face UMass Boston, a 7-2 winner over Stonehill in Saturday's first game, on Sunday in the championship game at 4:30.  The Penmen will face the Skyhawks in the 1:30 consolation contest.  The game does not count on SNHU's overall record as Penn State is a club team.

Penn State's Marek Polidor broke open a 2-2 tie with he scored a power play goal at the 2:38 mark of the third period.  The Nittany Lions would strike again at 7:13 on a Joseph Zitarelli goal, then Ryan Paradis would convert another power play opportunity at the 11:46 mark for PSU.

After a scoreless first period, Polidor gave Penn State a 1-0 lead 14:01 into the second period.  The lead was short-lived, as Frank O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.) scored 46 seconds later for the Penmen on assists from John Frey (Westminster, Colo.) and Bobby Bryant (Nashua, N.H.).  William Toomey (Reading, Mass.) gave Southern New Hampshire a 2-1 lead at the 16:41 mark on assists from Kent Honeyman (Marietta, Ga.) and Frey.  The Nittany Lions would tie the game 52 seconds before the second intermission on a Paradis' first goal of the game.

Penn State goalie Teddy Hume finished with 16 saves as the Nittany Lions outshot the Penmen 42-18.  SNHU netminder Mike Mastracci (Pittsburgh, Pa.) turned aside 37 shots.  PSU was 2-7 on the power play while the Penmen were 0-2 with the man advantage.
