WALTHAM, Mass. - Brian Tracey and John Brandt each
totaled 17 points to lead fifth-ranked Bentley University to an
83-71 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New
Hampshire University at the Dana Center Sunday afternoon. The
Falcons improved to 4-1 and 2-1 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are
now 2-2 and 1-2 in the league.
Tracey also grabbed nine rebounds
while Brandt went 7-11 from the floor as they paced four
Bentley players in double figures. Jason Westrol totaled 15
points, while Mike Quinn added 13 for the Falcons.
Tory Stapleton
(Rahway, N.J.) led Southern New Hampshire with 15 points and 11
rebounds, going 7-13 from the floor. Marcus
Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) added 14 points, five
rebounds and four assists, while Greg DeSantis
(Trumbull, Conn.) canned a pair of three pointers and finished with
10 points. Stephen Wood (South Jamaica
Queens, N.Y.) added nine points and three assists.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out
to an early 9-4 lead and built a 14-7 lead with 13:17 left in the
first half following a DeSantis three. Bentley responded with
a 9-0 run and took a 16-14 lead with 10:14 left on a basket by Greg
Jacques. The Falcons then used a 11-2 spurt to take a 35-23
lead with 3:26 left on a Joe Fremeau trifecta. The guests
scored the final five points of the first half and a basket by
Cory Vejraska (Alachua, Fla.) eight seconds before
intermission gave Bentley a 38-32 lead at the break.
The Penmen cut the lead to four,
40-36, 2:05 into the second half following a pair of DeSantis free
throws, but a 15-6 run capped by a steal and layup by Brandt at the
14:04 mark gave the Falcons a 55-42 lead. Bentley took a
70-55 lead with 7:09 left on a Westrol three, but the Penmen would
outscore the Falcons 12-4 over the next 3:23, with a Stapleton
layup with 3:46 left making it 74-67. The hosts then scored
the game's next nine points to put the game away.
Bentley canned four of its eight
three-point attempts in the first half and were 7-15 behind the arc
for the game. The Falcons outrebounded the Penmen 42-35 on
the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday night when it hosts Saint Michael's College in a
7:30 game at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
