PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Southern New Hampshire University men's ice hockey team won its
season opener, defeating Johnson and Wales University 6-3 Sunday
afternoon. Four different players scored goals for the
Penmen, while eight different players tallied points in the winning
effort. The Penmen are now 1-0-0 on the season, while the
Wildcats fall to 0-2-0.
Senior captain John
Frey (Westminster, Colo.) and Penmen newcomer
Brandon Bradley (Wichita, Kansas) each scored two
goals apiece, with Bradley also notching an assist.
Last year's Northeast-10 Player of the Year
Troy Maybury (South Portland, Maine) tallied a
goal and two assists, and rounding out the scoring for the Penmen
was Jake Berube (Spotsylvania, Va.).
After one period of play, the
Penmen held a 3-1 lead. Frey's first goal of the
game, an unassisted tally, was scored at 5:18 in the
first period. After a Wildcat goal scored by Jeremiah Ketts,
Bradley scored his first collegiate goal with helpers from
William Toomey (Reading, Mass.) and Maybury at
18:59. Exactly one minute later, with one second to go in the
first, Frey tallied his second goal of the game and his second of
the period from a Kent Honeyman (Marietta, Ga.)
feed.
Craig Houle of the Wildcats scored
a power play goal to lead off the second period scoring, cutting
the Penmen lead to one, SNHU would respond with two goals to take a
5-2 lead heading into the second intermission. Maybury
notched his first tally of the year on an assist from Bradley in
the twelfth minute. Bradley continued to be the hot hand for
the Penmen, as his second goal of the game at 14:00 gave the Penmen
a three goal lead. Assisting on Bradley's second goal were
Maybury and Penmen defenseman Neil Adams (Gardner,
Mass.).
Berube scored the sixth Penmen goal
of the afternoon at :49 of the third period on an assist by
Ryan DiBartolomeo (Leominster, Mass.). A
Jason Pietrasiak goal in the eleventh minute of the third period
was the last of the scoring on the afternoon.
Shane Brooks
(Kennebunk, Maine) went the distance in goal for the Penmen,
playing all sixty minutes in net while collecting his first win of
the season stopping 26 of 29 shots on goal. JR Woodland also
played the entire sixty minutes and faced 34 shots from the Penmen
offense, making 28 stops. Johnson and Wales was 2-8 on
the power play while the Penmen were 0-5 with the man
advantage.
The Penmen will have their home
opener November 10th at the Ice Den in Hooksett, N.H.,
as they will face Western New England College at 7:30 PM.
