Plymouth State Pushes Past Hockey 8-3

HOOKSETT, N.H. - Visiting Plymouth State University scored four unanswered goals in the third period en route to an 8-3 men's ice hockey victory over Southern New Hampshire University at The Ice Den Wednesday night.  The Panthers improved to 5-1 overall on the year, while the Penmen are 2-5-2 overall.

Chris Chambers led Plymouth State with two goals and three assists, while Bryan Kriner also tallied a pair of goals.  Matt Aponte and Sean Buckley each finished with a goal and two assists, while Andrew Stewart and Seth Phelan each totaled a goal and an assist.  John Frey (Westminster, Colo.), Troy Maybury (South Portland, Maine) and William Toomey (Reading, Mass.) each scored for the Penmen.

Plymouth State got on the board just 17 seconds into the contest when Buckley scored on feeds from Matt Aponte and Richie Zobak.  The Penmen would tie the game at the 6:37 mark with Frey scoring on assists from Frank O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.) and Doug Boulanger (Beauport, Quebec).  Chambers gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead at the 11:30 mark and Kriner scored on a power play with 3:48 left in the first period to give Plymouth State a 3-1 lead.  Maybury would pull the Penmen within a goal with 53 seconds left in the frame, with Neil Adams (Gardner, Mass.) and Bobby Bryant (Nashua, N.H.) assisting.

The Penmen would tie the game 4:06 into the second when Toomey recorded a short-handed goal.  Plymouth State reclaimed the lead with 5:10 left in the period on a Phelan goal.  The Panthers would then score four times in the third, including goals by Aponte and Kriner 42 seconds apart midway through the period.

Jack Astedt made 29 saves in goal to earn the win for Plymouth State, while Penmen netminder Mike Mastracci (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 23 stops.  The Penmen outshot the Panthers 32-31.  PSU was 1-6 with the man advantage while the Penmen were 0-6 on the power play.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it hosts Stonehill College in a 2:00 contest at Manchester's Verizon Wireless Arena.
