MANCHESTER, N.H. - Jenny McDade
(Derry, N.H.) scored 13 points to lead Southern New Hampshire
University to a 56-47 non-conference women's basketball victory
over Assumption College at the SNHU Fieldhouse Sunday
afternoon. The Penmen, who remained unbeaten at home this
season (5-0), improved to 7-4 overall. The Greyhounds, who
are receiving votes in the latest WBCA Division II poll, saw a
four-game win streak snapped and are now 7-2 on the season.
McDade, who was limited to 20
minutes as she was hampered by foul trouble, canned a pair of
three-pointers and was 5-6 at the free throw line. She also
added four rebounds and four steals. Sloane
Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) added 10 points, while
Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.) totaled nine
points and 13 rebounds. Libby Cullerot
(Henniker, N.H.) drained a pair of threes and finished with eight
points, while Andrea Lozeau (Pelham, N.H.) notched
seven points.
Gabrielle Gibson was the lone
Greyhound in double figures as she totaled 15 points. Katy
Howard added eight points for Assumption.
SNHU led 30-17 at halftime and
38-21 four minutes into the second half following a pair of free
throws by Sorrell, but the guests would hold the Penmen to just one
field goal in a stretch of 8:27 to pull within three, 40-37, with
7:31 to play on a Gibson layup. On the next Penmen
possession, Lozeau knocked down a three, and another three by
Cullerot with 5:46 to play allowed Southern New Hampshire to
reclaim a nine-point advantage, 48-39. Assumption would cut
the lead to five twice, the latest on a Molly Griffiths layup with
1:26 left, but Sorrell would counter with a layup on the hosts'
next possession, and the Penmen would knock down four free throws
in the final minute to seal the win.
Assumption led just twice in the
game's opening minutes, the last time on a Howard three with 14:03
left in the first half that gave the Greyhounds an 8-6 lead.
The Penmen used a 9-0 run capped by a Carrington basket with 6:17
left in the frame that gave them a 20-11 lead. That was part
of a larger 19-6 run to close out the first half, and a three by
Cullerot with just under a minute left gave the Penmen a 30-17
halftime lead.
The Penmen continued their stellar
defensive play, holding Assumption to just 19.4% shooting in the
first half and 30.3% for the game while the Greyhounds connected on
just three of their 19 three-point attempts. SNHU was 12-24
from the floor in the first half and were 6-14 behind the arc and
12-15 at the free throw line. Assumption was just 4-11 at the
free throw line. The Penmen overcame 24 turnovers by
outrebounding the Greyhounds 42-32.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday, December 29, when it faces Dowling College in the
first round of the Dowling Holiday Tournament in a 4:00 contest.
