MANCHESTER, N.H. - Troy Bowen (Nashua,
NH) finished with 17 points to lead Southern New Hampshire
University to a 66-51 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over
American International College at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday
afternoon. The Penmen, who won for the third time in four
games, improved to 13-11 overall and 9-10 in the NE-10, while the
Yellow Jackets are now 14-10 and 10-9 in the league.
Bowen finished 6-10 from the floor
and 3-5 from three-point land. He is now just four points shy
of 1,000 for his collegiate career. Tory
Stapleton (Rahway, NJ) was 6-11 from the field and
finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while Stephen
Wood (South Jamaica Queens, NY) and Cory
Vejraska (Alachua, FL) each added 10 points. Wood
also added four assists, four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Sesoo Ikpah was the lone Yellow
Jacket in double figures with 17 points and six rebounds.
Adrian Hynes-Guery and Aikeem Vanderhorst each finished with nine
points, while the Penmen held Isiah Wallace, AIC's leading scorer,
to six points on 2-11 shooting.
AIC jumped out to a 6-0 lead 1:23
into the game and led 14-7 on a pair of free throws by Wallace at
the 13:39 mark. The Penmen scored eight straight points and
took their first lead on a layup by Bowen with 10:45 left that made
it 15-14. The two teams then traded the lead seven times over
the next four-plus minutes before Stapleton gave SNHU the lead for
good with a basket at the 6:34 mark that made it 23-22. The
hosts scored the final 10 points of the first half to lead 31-22 at
intermission.
The guests cut the lead to four a
minute into the second half, but a 10-3 run capped by a Bowen three
with 15:27 to play gave SNHU a 41-30 lead. American
International got the lead down to eight with 9:12 on the clock,
but the Penmen scored the next 10 points to make it 55-37 with 4:13
left on a basket by Stapleton. A layup by Bowen with just
over a minute left gave SNHU its largest lead, 66-45.
Southern New Hampshire held the
Yellow Jackets to just 33.3% shooting for the game, including a
3-17 effort behind the arc. The Penmen connected on nine of
their 22 three point attempts while committing a season-low nine
turnovers. AIC held a 44-34 rebounding advantage.
SNHU returns to action on Wednesday
night when it travels to New Haven for a 7:30 contest.
