WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Tory
Stapleton (Rahway, NJ) finished with 17 points and Troy Bowen
(Nashua, NH) scored 15 points, including the 1,000th of
his collegiate career, to lead Southern New Hampshire University to
a 67-57 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over the University
of New Haven Wednesday night. The Penmen improved to 14-11
overall and 10-10 in the NE-10, while the Chargers are now 8-17 and
6-14 in the league.
Stapleton also grabbed eight
rebounds. Bowen, who needed four points to hit the 1,000 mark
entering the game, hit the milestone on a layup 4:28 into the
contest. He totaled 334 in his first two seasons at High
Point and has 677 in his Penmen career. Josh Morgan-Green
(Upper Marlboro, MD) had 14 points on 5-8 shooting, while
Lucas
Croteau (Rochester, NH) added 12 points. Stephen
Wood (South Jamaica Queens, NY) grabbed 10 rebounds.
Cassius Chaney paced New Haven with
20 points and 10 rebounds, while DJ Sackmann totaled 14 points and
Kelvin Jackson 13.
New Haven, which led 32-28 at
halftime, extended its lead to nine just over three minutes into
the second half on a three by Sackmann. Southern New
Hampshire then held the Chargers without a field goal for over 12
minutes, outscoring New Haven 25-4 over that stretch to take a
55-43 lead with 4:56 remaining on a three by Croteau. Chaney
broke the field goal drought for New Haven with a dunk following a
steal with 4:10 left.
The Chargers would get the SNHU
lead down to five, 60-55 with 1:27 left following a basket by
Chaney. The Penmen would seal the win by going 5-8 at the
stripe over the final 1:09, with a Morgan-Green basket with 18
seconds left accounting for the final.
Southern New Hampshire scored the
game's first seven points and built a 14-8 lead just over six
minutes into the game following a three by Bowen. New Haven
scored the next eight points and a Sackmann three with 10:29 left
before halftime gave the Chargers a 16-14 lead. The two teams
traded the lead twice before New Haven took the lead for good in
the half on a Sackmann three at the 8:30 mark. UNH took a
32-28 lead into the locker room.
SNHU shot 50% from three-point land
(5-10) over the final 20 minutes while holding New Haven to just
33.3% shooting in the second half (9-27). The Penmen made
eight more trips to the free throw line and were 12-19 at the
stripe while UNH was 5-11. The Penmen held a 38-34 rebounding
advantage and matched a season-low with eight turnovers.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it hosts Assumption College in a 3:30 contest
at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
