MANCHESTER, N.H. - Julia Houghtaling
(Franconia, NH) finished with a season-high 22 points and grabbed
eight rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 76-61
Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Assumption College
Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who
are currently ranked No. 9 in the East Region, improved to 16-10
overall and 11-10 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds are 15-11 and
13-8 in the league.
Houghtaling was 6-9 from the floor
and 10-12 at the free throw line. Christine Duffy
(South Boston, MA) matched her career high with 14 points while
also handing out five assists. Stephanie
Houghton (Manchester, NH) scored 13 points, while
Ashara
Carrington (Marblehead, MA) recorded a double-double
with 12 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Trish Gardner paced Assumption with
11 points, while Bethany Plasski and Leslie Lupien added 10 points
apiece for the Greyhounds.
Southern New Hampshire led
wire-to-wire and opened up a 14-5 lead just over six minutes into
the game following a three by Megan Shay (Candor,
NY). Assumption used a 7-2 run to pull within six, 22-16, on
a basket by Lupien with 5:58 before halftime, but the Penmen went
on a 13-3 run and a pair of free throws by Carrington at the 2:48
mark gave SNHU a 35-19 lead. The hosts held a 41-25 lead at
intermission following a layup at the buzzer by Duffy.
The Penmen increased their lead to
20 three times early in the second half, the last coming at the
12:28 mark on a Duffy three-pointer that made it 54-34. The
Greyhounds would use a 12-2 run capped by a Pam Mobley basket with
8:40 left to pull within 10. Assumption would cut the lead to
10 two more times down the stretch, the last coming with 2:39 left
to play on a basket by Plasski, but would get no closer.
Southern New Hampshire held a
commanding 41-25 rebounding advantage and was 25-28 (89.3%) at the
free throw line for the game, while Assumption was 17-26 at the
stripe. The Penmen shot 54.5% from the floor in the second
half and 48% for the game while limiting the guests to 37% shooting
for the game.
SNHU closes out the regular season
Tuesday night when it hosts UMass Lowell in a 5:30 contest at the
SNHU Fieldhouse.

improved to 13-4 overall when it holds teams to under 40% shooting
from the floor this season...Alyssa Whitney
(Somerville, MA) moved into a tie for ninth place on SNHU's career
assist list...with 265 helpers, she is tied with Houghton...the
Penmen, who are currently 10th in the Northeast-10
standings, can still earn a first-round NE-10 Tournament home game
, but need a win Tuesday.
