Chandronnait Named NE-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Year

EASTON, Mass. - Sophomore Amber Chandronnait (Bow, NH) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team was named the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Vern Cox Player of the Year Award, it was announced Sunday morning.  In addition, the Penmen had a total of five NE-10 All-Conference selections.

Chandronnait and classmate Catalina Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) each garnered First Team honors at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while the pair also earned Second Team accolades at No. 1 doubles.  Junior Alison Waring (Westborough, MA) was a Second Team recipient at No. 4 singles, while senior Meghan Welch (Mon Vernon, NH) garnered Third Team honors at No. 6.  Welch and Courteney Blais (Paxton, MA) were named to the Second Team at No. 3 doubles.

Chandronnait, in her first season with the Penmen, posted a 15-0 record in dual match doubles play this season, including a 12-0 mark during NE-10 play.  Her overall record stands at 22-1 overall as she captured the singles title at the Wilson/ITA East Regional and finished fifth at the National Small College Championship.  All but one of her singles wins during conference play were in straight sets and six of the 12 were by 6-0, 6-0 scores.  In doubles play, she and Echeverry have posted a 12-1 record, including a 9-1 mark during the conference season.

Echeverry earned All-Conference accolades for the second time in her career as she was named to the Second Team at No. 1 singles last season.  Echeverry also rolled up a 12-0 record during Northeast-10 play and has a 16-2 record during singles play this season.  Like Chandronnait, she dropped just one set during conference play.

Waring recorded a 8-3 record playing in the No. 4 position and posted a 9-3 record in singles play during the season.  Welch finished with a 7-4 record playing in the No. 6 position, while she and Blais, a sophomore, posted a 7-2 mark playing third doubles all season.

SNHU finished in a tie for second place in the Northeast-10 regular season standings and advanced to the NE-10 semifinals for the second straight season.  The Penmen are ranked fifth in the latest NCAA East Region ranking and await word on a possible at-large selection to the NCAA Championship.
