Women's Soccer Edged by Stonehill in 2OT

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Molly Mattern scored with 3:02 remaining to lift Stonehill College to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 women's soccer Wednesday night at Larkin Field.  The Skyhawks improved to 4-2 and 2-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 3-4-1 and 1-2-1 in the league.

Mattern's goal was set up when a long Stonehill pass from the midfield came to the top of the box.  SNHU keeper Stef Young (Natick, Mass.) came out to play the ball and collided with a Skyhawk as well as a Penmen defender, leaving a free ball in the top left corner of the 18.  Mattern collected the loose ball and fired into the open net, finding the far right post.

Southern New Hampshire would take a 1-0 lead in the 23rd  minute.  Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) slipped a pass to Emily Donahue (Bristol, R.I.), who fired a shot from 10 yards that got past Stonehill keeper Sarah Hickey and found the far right post.  The Skyhawks would tie the game at the 63:21 mark when Alexandra Murphy worked past a Penmen defender and found herself alone on Young.  Murphy would beat Young to tie the contest.

SNHU nearly took a 2-1 lead with three minutes to go in regulation when Hickey was out of position playing a cross, but a shot from Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H.) banged off the near right post.  The Penmen also ended it midway through the first 10-minute overtime, but a shot by Teixeira was snuffed out by Hickey.

The Skyhawks put a flurry of pressure around the Southern New Hampshire goal in the first minute of the second overtime, but shots by Kelly Regan and Kelsey Mahoney slid just outside the post.

Hickey turned aside four shots for the Skyhawks, who were outshot 19-14.  Young made three saves for Southern New Hampshire.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it travels to American International College for a noon contest.
