Men's Basketball Writes Off AIC 67-61

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens, N.Y.) totaled 16 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 67-61 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over American International College at the SNHU Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.  The Penmen improved to 8-6 overall and 3-6 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets are now 6-8 and 4-5 in the league.

Wood finished 7-11 from the floor and also grabbed five rebounds.  Marcus Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) totaled 12 points, going 4-7 from the floor, while freshman Hanell Velez (Woburn, Mass.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and added 10 points.  Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) totaled nine points.

Ricky Hudson led all scorers with 20 points for AIC, going 8-13 from the floor, while Mike Troll was 4-8 behind the arc and finished with 15 points.  Aikeem Vanderhorst registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The opening moments of the game saw four ties and four lead changes before Velez made back-to-back threes to give the Penmen a 16-11 lead with 11:36 left in the first half.  SNHU extended its lead to eight, 24-16, with 6:49 left before the break on a pair of free throws by Stapleton, but AIC countered with an 8-0 run and a layup by Kent Graham at the 4:56 mark tied the game 24-24.  The Penmen would hold the Yellow Jackets scoreless the rest of the half and score the half's final seven points to open up a 31-24 lead at halftime.

The hosts extended their lead to 10 before Hudson broke the drought for AIC with a basket at the 15:56 mark of the second half.  Up 39-33, the Penmen would use a 10-2 run capped by a Matthews three with 9:05 left to take their largest lead, 49-35.  The Yellow Jackets used a late 9-2 run to pull within six, 59-53, with 2:21 to go on a Byron Richards three, but that would be as close as AIC would get.

Southern New Hampshire shot 59.1% (13-22) from the floor over the final 20 minutes and 49% for the game, while American International was 50% for the game and 54.5% in the second half (12-22).  The Yellow Jackets knocked down seven of their 19 three-point attempts and outrebounded the Penmen 33-27, but were haunted by 19 turnovers.  The Penmen owned a 28-2 advantage in bench scoring as AIC used just seven players.

Southern New Hampshire is back in action Tuesday night when it travels to The College of Saint Rose for a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest.
