MANCHESTER, N.H. - Stephen Wood
(South Jamaica Queens, N.Y.) totaled 16 points to lead Southern New
Hampshire University to a 67-61 Northeast-10 men's basketball
victory over American International College at the SNHU Fieldhouse
Sunday afternoon. The Penmen improved to 8-6 overall and 3-6
in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets are now 6-8 and 4-5 in the
league.
Wood finished 7-11 from the floor
and also grabbed five rebounds. Marcus
Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) totaled 12 points, going
4-7 from the floor, while freshman Hanell Velez
(Woburn, Mass.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and added 10
points. Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.)
totaled nine points.
Ricky Hudson led all scorers with
20 points for AIC, going 8-13 from the floor, while Mike Troll was
4-8 behind the arc and finished with 15 points. Aikeem
Vanderhorst registered a double-double with 11 points and 10
rebounds.
The opening moments of the game saw
four ties and four lead changes before Velez made back-to-back
threes to give the Penmen a 16-11 lead with 11:36 left in the first
half. SNHU extended its lead to eight, 24-16, with 6:49 left
before the break on a pair of free throws by Stapleton, but AIC
countered with an 8-0 run and a layup by Kent Graham at the 4:56
mark tied the game 24-24. The Penmen would hold the Yellow
Jackets scoreless the rest of the half and score the half's final
seven points to open up a 31-24 lead at halftime.
The hosts extended their lead to 10
before Hudson broke the drought for AIC with a basket at the 15:56
mark of the second half. Up 39-33, the Penmen would use a
10-2 run capped by a Matthews three with 9:05 left to take their
largest lead, 49-35. The Yellow Jackets used a late 9-2 run
to pull within six, 59-53, with 2:21 to go on a Byron Richards
three, but that would be as close as AIC would get.
Southern New Hampshire shot 59.1%
(13-22) from the floor over the final 20 minutes and 49% for the
game, while American International was 50% for the game and 54.5%
in the second half (12-22). The Yellow Jackets knocked down
seven of their 19 three-point attempts and outrebounded the Penmen
33-27, but were haunted by 19 turnovers. The Penmen owned a
28-2 advantage in bench scoring as AIC used just seven players.
Southern New Hampshire is back in
action Tuesday night when it travels to The College of Saint Rose
for a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest.
