ALBANY, N.Y. - Tory Stapleton
(Rahway, N.J.) posted his sixth double-double of the season with 20
points and 12 rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University to
a 75-70 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over The College of
Saint Rose at Nolan Gymnasium Tuesday night. The Penmen, who
picked up their first road victory of the season, improved to 9-6
overall and 4-6 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights, who had won
three in a row and eight of 10, are now 9-6 and 6-4 in the league.
The win marks SNHU's first win at
Saint Rose since the 2000-01 season, and just its second all-time
in nine tries against the Golden Knights at Saint Rose.
Stapleton matched his season-high
in scoring while recording his third double-double in the past four
games. He was one of four Penmen to reach double
figures. Stephen Wood (South Jamaica Queens,
N.Y.) totaled 14 points on 5-10 shooting, while Josh
Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, Md.) knocked down a pair of
three-pointers and finished with 12 points and four assists.
Cory Vejraska (Alachua, Fla.) chipped in with 10
points.
Shea Bromirski and Brian Hanuschak
led Saint Rose with 19 points apiece. Bromirski was 5-10
behind the three-point arc, while Hanuschak was 6-8 from the floor
and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Andre Pope added 16 points and
four rebounds.
Saint Rose jumped out to a quick
8-2 lead three minutes into the game, but the Penmen held the
Golden Knights scoreless for six minutes and took a 10-8 lead on a
basket by Morgan-Green with 11:08 to play in the first half.
The two teams would trade the lead five times before Wood converted
a layup 3:46 before intermission to give the Penmen a 21-20
lead. The guests took their largest lead of the first half,
27-21, 1:35 before intermission on a Hanell Velez
(Woburn, Mass.) basket and led 27-23 at halftime.
The Penmen outscored the Golden
Knights 14-4 over the first five minutes of the second half and a
steal and layup by Josh Last (Hooksett, N.H.) with
15:05 to play put Southern New Hampshire on top 41-29. Saint
Rose would get back in the game with a 9-2 spurt, as Bromirski
would knock down three three-pointers in a span of 2:02 to cut the
lead to five, 52-47.
The Golden Knights pulled within
four, 57-53, on a pair of Hanuschak free throws with 7:16 left, but
Stapleton scored the game's next five points to give SNHU a 62-53
lead with 6:02 to play. Saint Rose would cut the lead to five
five times in the final 2:41 of the contest, but would get no
closer.
The Penmen, who committed a
season-low eight turnovers, were 16-28 (57.1%) from the floor over
the final 20 minutes and outrebounded Saint Rose 14-7 on the
offensive glass that led to a 15-8 edge in second chance
points. SNHU also had 20 points off 20 Golden Knight
giveaways. The Penmen matched a season high with 13 steals.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Sunday afternoon when it hosts Le Moyne College in a 3:30
contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
