NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Host UMass Dartmouth scored
five times in the third period to down Southern New Hampshire
University 6-3 in non-conference ice hockey Thursday evening at
Hetland Ice Arena. The Corsairs improved to 6-10-1, while the
Penmen are now 3-10-2 on the season.
After a scoreless first period,
Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 1-0 lead 2:15 into the
second period on an unassisted goal by Andrew
Hildreth (Leominster, Mass.). Aaron Blades would tie
the game two minutes later for the Corsairs, but Hildreth would
give the Penmen back the lead on a power play goal with 5:31 left
in the stanza. Frank O'Connor (Arlington,
Mass.) assisted on the goal. The guests would take their 2-1
lead into the second intermission.
Adam Horgan and Todd Bartleson
would score 48 seconds apart to give UMass Dartmouth a 3-2 lead
2:40 into the third frame. The Corsairs would extend their
lead 24 seconds shy of the midway point of the third on a Phil
Bronner goal, but Southern New Hampshire would make it a one goal
game with six minutes left on Kent Honeyman's
(Marietta, Ga.) first goal of the season, with Troy Maybury (South
Portland, Maine) assisting on the tally.
Giancarlo Capodanno would score
twice, first at 17:43, then adding an empty-net goal at the 19:08
mark, to close out the scoring for the Corsairs.
Jon Dryjowicz-Burek made 21 saves
in goal for UMass Dartmouth, while Mike Mastracci
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) turned aside 39 shots for Southern New Hampshire
as the Corsairs outshot the Penmen 45-24. SNHU was 1-4 on the
power play while UMD was 1-5 with the man advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to Assumption for a 6:35 contest.
