WORCESTER, Mass. - Kayla Parker totaled 14 points
to lead Assumption College as it held off a late Southern New
Hampshire rally to post a 56-50 Northeast-10 women's basketball
victory at Laska Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The
Greyhounds, who are ranked No. 10 in the East Region, improved to
11-9 overall and 8-7 in the NE-10, while the Pennmen are 10-12 and
6-9 in the league.
Parker finished 5-7 from the floor to pace three Assumption
players in double figures. Gabrielle Gibson finished with 13
points, while Kelly Meredith added 10 points and six rebounds.
Senior Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.)
led Southern New Hampshire with a game-high 25 points, totaling 20
of those points in the second half. It marked her third
straight 20-plus point scoring performance and the 11th
straight game in which she reached double figures in scoring.
She also pulled down 13 rebounds, matching a season high and two
shy of her career high. Jenny McDade (Derry,
N.H.) also registered a double-double with 10 points and 11
rebounds.
Southern New Hampshire trailed by as many as 14 points in the
first half and found itself down 46-34 with 11:38 left. The
Penmen then held the Greyhounds without a field goal for over seven
minutes and used a 16-0 run to build a 50-46 lead with 5:23 left on
a layup by Carrington. Carrington had the final 14 points of
the SNHU run, as she was 5-6 from the floor during the run.
Assumption would retake the lead on a basket by Parker that made
it 51-50. The Greyhounds scored the game's final 10 points to
take down the victory. Southern New Hampshire trailed 53-50
with just under a minute left following a McDade steal, but after
Carrington had an attempt blocked by Parker, Parker would grab the
rebound but be whistled for her fifth foul. A three attempt
by McDade from the right corner was off the mark, and Assumption
made three free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the win.
SNHU trailed 33-22 at halftime but cut the lead to seven twice
in the opening moments of the second half, with a Carrington tip-in
with 16:40 to play making it 35-28. Assumption then ran off
six unanswered points to take their largest lead of the frame,
41-28, with 15:52 left on a Kelly Meredith basket.
The first half saw seven lead changes, but Assumption took
control of the stanza with an 11-0 run capped by a conventional
three-point play by Parker with 5:49 left in the first half.
The Greyhounds took their largest lead, 33-19, with 2:38 left on a
Sabrina Siciliano basket. A three by Christine
Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) 36 seconds before intermission
made it 33-22 at the break.
Assumption limited SNHU to just 30.3% shooting for the
contest. The Penmen did hold a 44-43 rebounding edge over the
Greyhounds.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it
travels to Saint Anselm College for a 5:30 game.
