MANCHESTER, N.H. - Josh
Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led four Southern New
Hampshire University players in double figures with 20 points as it
downed Concordia (N.Y.) College 82-67 in non-conference men's
basketball Monday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen,
who have won four out of their last five, improve to 7-5, while the
Clippers remain searching for their first win as they fall to 0-12.
Morgan-Green, who scored at least
20 points for the fourth time in the past five games, was 8-12 from
the floor and drained four of his five three-point attempts.
He also added four steals and three assists. Marcus
Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was 8-9 at the free throw
line and totaled 12 points, while Manchester Central product
Josh Last (Hooksett, N.H.) added a career-best 12
points and handed out three assists. Tory
Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) recorded a double-double with 11
points and 10 rebounds, while Billy Marsden
(Pelham, N.H.) totaled a career-best nine points.
Cory Vejraska (Alachua, Fla.) added eight points.
Brandon Whitaker led Concordia with
20 points, while William Eason finished with 14 points and 13
rebounds for the guests.
SNHU led 35-34 at halftime, but
opened the second half on a 16-2 run and the second of back-to-back
threes by Morgan-Green gave the Penmen a 51-36 lead with 15:41 to
play. SNHU took a 16-point lead, 54-38, with 14:37 left on a
Last three. Trailing 59-43 with 12:30 left, Concordia would
reel off a 17-6 run and a layup by Douglas Soutar with 6:05 to go
pulled the Clippers within five, 65-60.
The Penmen answered with five
straight points, with a layup by Stapleton with 4:19 left making it
a 70-60 ballgame. Southern New Hampshire outscored Concordia
17-7 over the final 5:33 of the contest and led by as many as 18
points, taking a 82-64 lead on a Stapleton layup with 1:32 left.
Concordia led just once, at 1-0,
and the Penmen opened up a 10-1 lead 2:18 into the game. SNHU
took its largest lead of the first half, 29-17, with just under
seven minutes to go on a basket by Hanell Velez
(Woburn, Mass.). The Clippers outscored the Penmen 17-6 the
rest of the half, and a layup by Whitaker 14 seconds before
intermission put Concordia down 35-34 at the break.
Southern New Hampshire was 15-29
(51.7%) from the floor over the final 20 minutes and knocked down
six of its nine three-point attempts in the second half, finishing
the game 8-16 behind the arc. Concordia was 26-53 from the
floor during the game, but hit on just three of its 10 three-point
attempts and was also 12-20 at the free throw line as opposed to
SNHU's 18-26 effort. The Clippers also committed 22 turnovers
that led to 28 Penmen points.
SNHU returns to Northeast-10 action
Wednesday night when it travels to Garden City, N.Y. to face NE-10
co-leader Adelphi in a 7:30 contest.
