NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Holly Dawson scored with 8:11 remaining in overtime to lead the University of New Haven to a 3-2 win over the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Penmen fall to 4-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the win improves the Chargers to 6-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in NE-10 play.
New Haven would strike first at the 4:44 mark as Lucy Francisco tallied an unassisted goal on a shot from outside the penalty box. Southern New Hampshire would even the game at 1-1 2:10 later, as Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H.) converted on a pass from Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I.). The two teams would carry the 1-1 tie into the second half.
New Haven would take the second lead of the game at the 51:17 mark as Monica Yanez connected on a pass from Francisco. Teixeira would again even the game for the Penmen almost 15 minutes later as she fired a penalty kick past New Haven goalkeeper Kim Taylor. The score would remain 2-2 through the remainder of the second half to force overtime.
Dawson's game-winning goal in the overtime period would come off Francisco's second assist of the day.
Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) recorded three saves in the complete-game effort for the Penmen. Taylor recorded five saves en route to the win for the Chargers as Southern New Hampshire outshot New Haven 16-11 on the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Sunday, hosting Adelphi University at 1:00 p.m. in Northeast-10 action on Larkin Field.
