ASHBURN, Mass.—Troy Maybury (South Portland, Maine) scored twice to lead the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 3-1 win against Johnson and Wales University at the Pepperidge Farm Invitational Tournament held by Worcester State College on Thursday evening. The win marks the first for the Penmen this season who even their record to 1-1 overall, while the loss drops the Wildcats to 1-2 on the season.
Maybury would notch his first goal 4:15 into the game to give the Penmen the early 1-0 lead on assists from Tautvydas Shalna (Williston, Vt.) and William Toomey (Reading, Mass.). The Penmen would carry the lead into the second period, where Brian Troy (Ashburnham, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from Cameron O'Brien (Spofford, N.H.) with just under four minutes left to play in the period. The Penmen would hold the 2-0 advantage into the second intermission.
Maybury tallied his second goal of the game 1:35 into the final frame, again on assists from Shalna and Toomey. The Wildcats added a goal of their own 1:03 later as Jason Pietrasiak converted the shot on assists from Jeremiah Ketts and Domenic Recchia.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded 63 saves in his first career start for the Penmen. Johnson and Wales goaltender Matt Cooper stopped 25 shots in 58:36 of work for the Wildcats.
Southern New Hampshire will face the winner of tonight's matchup between Western New England and Worcester State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to round out the Pepperidge Farm Invitational at Worcester State.
