NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Host Merrimack College
placed six players in double figures en route to a 75-58
Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire
University at Volpe Gym Wednesday night. The Warriors
improved to 19-7 overall and 16-6 in the NE-10, while the Penmen
are now 14-13 and 9-13 in the league.
SNHU will open the Northeast-10
Tournament as the No. 11 seed and will travel to sixth-seeded Saint
Rose for a 1:00 contest Saturday afternoon.
Darren Duncan led Merrimack with 12
points and four assists, while Roland Davis and Darin Mency each
added 11 points. Wayne Mack, Aaron Strothers and Tyler Young
each recorded 10 points on the evening.
Lucas Croteau
(Rochester, N.H.) was 3-4 behind the arc and led Southern New
Hampshire with 11 points, while Tory Stapleton
(Rahway, N.J.) totaled all 10 of his points in the second half.
Merrimack opened up a 9-2 lead 5:41
into the game, but Southern New Hampshire chipped away at the lead
and a layup by Marcus Matthews (Valley Stream,
N.Y.) 8:49 before halftime cut the lead to one, 15-14. The
Warriors then used a 17-0 run capped by a conventional three-point
play by Young to take a 32-14 lead with 3:20 left in the first
half. The hosts held a 39-21 lead at the break.
Southern New Hampshire opened the
second half on a 12-5 run and a jumper by Hanell
Velez (Woburn, Mass.) with 15:04 left made it a 44-33
game. That would be as close as the Penmen would get, and the
Warriors took their largest lead, 75-50, with 2:43 to play on a
Davis basket.
Merrimack limited Southern New
Hampshire to 33.9% shooting for the contest while the Warriors made
10 more trips to the free throw line, going 15-24 at the stripe
while the Penmen were 11-14. SNHU outrebounded Merrimack
45-38.
