Merrimack Too Much for Men's Basketball

BOX SCORE

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Host Merrimack College placed six players in double figures en route to a 75-58 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Volpe Gym Wednesday night.  The Warriors improved to 19-7 overall and 16-6 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 14-13 and 9-13 in the league.

SNHU will open the Northeast-10 Tournament as the No. 11 seed and will travel to sixth-seeded Saint Rose for a 1:00 contest Saturday afternoon.

Darren Duncan led Merrimack with 12 points and four assists, while Roland Davis and Darin Mency each added 11 points.  Wayne Mack, Aaron Strothers and Tyler Young each recorded 10 points on the evening.

Lucas Croteau (Rochester, N.H.) was 3-4 behind the arc and led Southern New Hampshire with 11 points, while Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) totaled all 10 of his points in the second half.

Merrimack opened up a 9-2 lead 5:41 into the game, but Southern New Hampshire chipped away at the lead and a layup by Marcus Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) 8:49 before halftime cut the lead to one, 15-14.  The Warriors then used a 17-0 run capped by a conventional three-point play by Young to take a 32-14 lead with 3:20 left in the first half.  The hosts held a 39-21 lead at the break.

Southern New Hampshire opened the second half on a 12-5 run and a jumper by Hanell Velez (Woburn, Mass.) with 15:04 left made it a 44-33 game.  That would be as close as the Penmen would get, and the Warriors took their largest lead, 75-50, with 2:43 to play on a Davis basket.

Merrimack limited Southern New Hampshire to 33.9% shooting for the contest while the Warriors made 10 more trips to the free throw line, going 15-24 at the stripe while the Penmen were 11-14.  SNHU outrebounded Merrimack 45-38.
