WORCESTER, Mass. - Northeast-10 Co-Freshman of the
Year Gabrielle Gibson totaled 23 points to lead sixth-seeded
Assumption College past No. 11 seed Southern New Hampshire
University 77-70 in the first round of the 2010 Northeast-10
Women's Basketball Championship Sunday at Laska Gym. The
Greyhounds, who advance to Tuesday's quarterfinal round at
third-seeded Stonehill, improve to 16-12 overall, while the Penmen
see their season come to a close at 13-17.
Gibson finished 8-16 from the floor
to lead four Greyhounds in double figures. Kayla Parker
totaled 15 points, going 7-7 at the free throw line, while Katy
Howard added 13 points and eight assists. Kelly Meredith
finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for Assumption.
Freshman Sloane
Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) registered her third
double-double of the season to lead Southern New Hampshire,
totaling 24 points on 9-16 shooting while grabbing 11
rebounds. Ashara Carrington (Marblehead,
Mass.) scored all 18 of her points in the second half, going 7-14
from the floor for the game. She wrapped up her career with
1,073 points, placing her eighth in program history in career
scoring. Jenny McDade (Derry, N.H.) totaled
14 points and six rebounds, while Magdala Johnson
(Sandown, N.H.) added seven points and four assists.
Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) finished
with five points and six assists.
Southern New Hampshire, which
trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half and by nine at
halftime, opened the second half on a 12-4 run and a conventional
three-point play by Carrington just over four minutes in cut the
Assumption lead to one, 37-36. The hosts countered with a
13-4 run to build a 50-40 lead with just under 12 minutes to go and
took a 58-46 lead on a Molly Griffiths free throw with 7:43 to
play.
The Penmen would outscore
Assumption 16-5 over the next four minutes and a putback by
Carrington with just under four minutes to play made it a one-point
game, 63-62. The Greyhounds would score the next four points
and a Howard jumper with 2:41 on the clock gave the hosts a 67-62
lead. Sorrell would counter with a layup at the other end,
but Gibson knocked down a three with 2:12 to go to make it
70-64. Assumption would seal the win by going 5-6 at the free
throw line in the final minute.
SNHU led just once, when Sorrell
made 1-of-2 at the line 1:42 in to give the Penmen a 1-0
lead. Assumption scored the game's next six points and opened
up a 17-5 lead 7:45 into the contest following a Gibson
basket. The Greyhounds took their largest lead, 21-8, with
8:50 left before intermission on a Sabrina Siciliano layup and took
a 33-24 lead into the locker room.
Assumption shot 51.7% (15-29) over
the final 20 minutes and 47.3% for the game while holding the
Penmen to 30% (9-30) shooting in the first half and 39.4% for the
contest. The Greyhounds outrebounded Southern New Hampshire
39-37 and were 22-26 at the free throw line while the guests were
just 14-23 at the stripe.
