HOOKSETT, N.H.—Bobby Bryant (Nashua, N.H.) scored twice and added an assist to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's ice hockey team to a 4-0 win against the visiting Franklin Pierce University Ravens. With the win, the Penmen snap a seven-game winless streak and boost their record to 3-9-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the loss drops the Ravens to 3-15-0 overall and 2-2-0 in NE-10 action.
The shutout win marks the first for the Penmen since they blanked Western New England by a score of 2-0 on Nov. 11, 2008.
After a scoreless first period, the Penmen would take the 1-0 advantage 1:39 into the second frame when Tautvydas Shalna (Williston, Vt.) collected a pass from Bryant at the hash marks and one-touched the puck past Ravens' goaltender Ben Siok to tally his second goal of the season. The score would remain unchanged for the remainder of the period.
Bryant added his first goal of the game 10:35 into the final frame, collecting a pass from Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.) and outskating the defender to the goal to top-shelf the puck and give the Penmen the 2-0 advantage. Troy Maybury (South Portland, Maine) would make it 3-0 almost five minutes later after shooting from the left face-off circle. Chris Hickey (Milford, N.H.) assisted on the goal.
Bryant's second goal of the game would come with 3:38 remaining in the game on a power play opportunity. Shalna assisted on the goal. The Ravens would have a chance to get on the board with 26 seconds remaining as Pat Shortt had a breakaway, but Penmen goaltender Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) would collect the shot to solidify the 4-0 SNHU advantage.
Holske recorded 30 saves in the win for the Penmen and earned his first collegiate shutout. Ravens goaltender Ben Siok totaled 38 saves in 56:22 of work before giving way to teammate Matt McCarthy, who tallied two saves. SNHU outshot Franklin Pierce 44-30 and went 1-for-5 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished the evening 0-for-6 with the man-advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on January 25 when it plays host to Stonehill College. The Northeast-10 Conference matchup is slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
