Women's Basketball Cruises Past Post 77-58

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) totaled 16 points and Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) registered eight points and 12 assists to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 77-58 women's basketball victory over Post University at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday night.  The Penmen won their fourth in a row to improve to 9-2, while the Eagles are now 2-8 on the season.

DeRoma knocked down a trio of three pointers, while Duffy was 4-7 from the floor and handed out her career-best 12 assists against just two turnovers.  Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.) added 10 points, while Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine), Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) and Victoria Wiseman (Montreal,, Quebec) all finished with nine points apiece.  Wiseman also hauled down 10 rebounds.

Diaysha Brewington led Post with 10 points off the bench.

Southern New Hampshire trailed just once, at 2-0, and opened up a 19-7 lead eight minutes into the game following a basket by Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde).  The Penmen used a 9-0 spurt to build a 39-19 lead following back-to-back threes by Duffy and DeRoma with 2:38 left, and took a 40-26 lead into halftime.

The hosts opened the second half on an 11-2 run and took a 51-28 lead with 17:44 left on a Spanarkel basket.  SNHU took its largest lead, 59-34, with 14:33 left on a Wiseman layup and maintained at least a 17-point lead the rest of the way.

Southern New Hampshire shot 50% in the second half and 45.4% for the game while also knocking down seven of their 17 three-point attempts.  The Eagles shot 32.4% in the first half and 39.1% for the game.  As a team the Penmen outrebounded Post 45-44 and had 21 assists to just 10 turnovers, while the guests committed 17 turnovers and had just seven helpers.

SNHU is idle until December 29 when it faces the University of Bridgeport in the first round of the Bridgeport Holiday Tournament at 2:00 pm.
