BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) finished with 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University to an 84-80 men's basketball victory over C.W. Post at the Pratt Recreation Center Friday evening. The Penmen improved to 7-5, while the Pioneers now stand at 7-4 on the season.
Stapleton finished 8-15 from the floor to pace three Penmen in double figures. Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) totaled 17 points on 6-11 shooting, while Josh Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, Md.) notched 11 of his season-high 15 points in the second half, going 6-8 from the floor and 3-4 behind the arc. In the second half, Morgan-Green was 4-4, including all three of his threes. Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) and CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) each added eight points.
Stefan Bonneau led four Pioneers in double figures with 22 points, while Vaughn Allen had 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Southern New Hampshire trailed 57-47 with 14:33 remaining when it reeled off 13 unanswered points to build a 60-57 lead following a layup by Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro). The Penmen took their largest lead, 72-66, with 6:40 left on a three by Morgan-Green.
C.W. Post used a 10-4 spurt to tie the game on a pair of Allen free throws with 2:14 left that made it 76-76. With 42.2 seconds left, Marriro would be fouled on a rebound of an Allen miss and sank both free throws to put the Penmen up for good. Southern New Hampshire would seal the victory by going 8-8 at the charity stripe in the final moments, with Marriro converting two more with 2.8 seconds left to ice the victory.
The Pioneers led most of the first half and took their largest lead, 36-25, with 4:40 remaining in the first half on a Bonneau basket. Southern New Hampshire would use a 14-5 run to pull within two, 41-39, on a pair of DeSantis free throws 41 seconds before intermission, and the Penmen trailed 43-39 at the break.
The guests went to the charity stripe 14 fewer times than C.W. Post, going 12-17 at the free-throw line while the Pioneers were 20-31. The Penmen shot 57.7% from the floor in the second half and 50% (33-66) for the game, while knocking down six of their 10 three-point attempts, including all five they took over the final 20 minutes. The Pioneers shot just 33.3% (11-33) in the second stanza and 42.2% for the game but outrebounded Southern New Hampshire 43-38. SNHU's 84 points were a season-high.
SNHU returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Le Moyne College in a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
