Student-Athlete Spotlight: Samantha Whittier

Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Whittier (Sutton, Mass.) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team saw her first minutes of action in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win against C.W. Post.  In just over 51 minutes of work, Whittier posted two saves while allowing just one goal.  In this week's Student-Athlete spotlight, Whittier answers ten questions that provide insight into what she does when she's not on the soccer field.

Name: Samantha Whittier

Major: Hospitality Business

Pregame routine: Before a game, I remember the reason I play soccer while I pace the hallway zoning out from everything except tranquility.

Something people don't know about me: Most people don't know that I like Enrique Iglesias music.

The moment I am most proud of: Everyday, I'm so very proud to be an American.

Favorite Athlete:  My favorite athlete is Jay Heaps.  Jay was a phenomenal defender for the Revs until his retirement after the 2009 season.  He was a world-class athlete who led the team and gave everything in every match. After every game, he showed his appreciation for the fans by walking around the far end of the field while clapping to the fans, usually making him the last player off the field.

Favorite meal in the SNHU Dining Center: Breakfast: Ed's omelets with chocolate milk.

Three items I would want if I was stranded on a desert island: I'm a very practical and realistic person so I'd need a knife because it would be useful.  Sunscreen is a must with my skin if I have any intent of getting off the island without being burnt to a crisp.  Lastly, I would probably need clothing for protection from Mother Nature, possible First Aid and food preservation.

What's on my iPod: Jason Aldean, Justin Moore, Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans—anything country for the most part.

In five years: In five years, I will be in Sutton, Mass. proudly continuing to work as a fifth generation dairy farmer. I will be pursuing the advancement of our farm in various ways. I am also planning to own a restaurant in or around Sutton and hopefully in five years this goal will be that much closer to reality.

One item I can't live without: In agreement with Albert Schweitzer who said, "If you have something you can't do without, you don't own it; it owns you," there is no item I can't live without.  Material items provide momentary content, true happiness is the experience.

Places I would like to visit someday: I love going different places and each one is always interesting and unique in its own way.  I am going to visit a farm soon that has a robotic milker and I am very excited to see one in operation.
