GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Adelphi University, which entered Saturday in first place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings, used a balanced attack to defeat Southern New Hampshire University 57-50 in men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.  The Panthers improve to 13-4 overall and 10-3 in NE-10 play, while the Penmen saw a two-game win streak snapped and are now 10-8 and 6-7 in the league.

Chris Ranglin and Robert Johnson led Adelphi with 11 points apiece.  Ranglin grabbed 10 rebounds while Johnson added nine caroms.  Bradley Simpson finished with eight points and 10 boards, while Cliff Brown and Richard Harkins chipped in with seven points apiece.

Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) led Southern New Hampshire with 17 points and seven rebounds, going 6-13 from the floor.  Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) totaled nine points, while Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) added eight points off the bench.

Southern New Hampshire led 30-26 at halftime and extended its lead to 35-28 1:24 into the second half on a three-pointer by Lucas Croteau (Rochester, N.H.).  Adelphi responded with an 8-0 run capped by a Ranglin three at the 14:20 mark to take a 36-35 mark, but the Penmen scored the game's next four points and BJ Cardarelli's (Manchester, Conn.) with 12:39 left gave the guests a 39-36 lead.

The two teams would trade the lead seven times over the next seven minutes, with Adelphi taking the lead for good on a Simpson layup with 5:08 to play that made it 47-46.  The Panthers extended the lead to 49-46 before Dobrovic made it a 49-48 contest with 3:23 to go.  Adelphi would seal the win by holding the Penmen to just one field goal the rest of the way, a Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) basket with 43 seconds left, and by going 4-6 at the free throw line in the final 49 seconds.

Adelphi opened up a 14-4 lead just over five minutes into the game, but SNHU used a 10-2 run to pull within two on a three by Cardarelli 11:43 before halftime.  Trailing 24-20 with 5:55 left, the Penmen closed the half on another 10-2 run and a Stapleton layup 1:24 before the break made it 30-26 at intermission.

Both teams shot under 40%, with the Panthers shooting 38.9% and Southern New Hampshire 34.6% for the game.  Adelphi did outrebound the Penmen 43-36, leading to a 12-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Southern Connecticut State University for a 7:30 contest.
